Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

So, I've got a problem. My turbo's making this "wonderful" noise. It sounds like tranny whine, aka much lower pitched than the usual turbo whine, and the volume is directly related to how far the turbo is spooled.

Now, as far as assumed related problems... Well, I can't spool the turbo anymore without spewing tons of oil smoke out of the tailpipe. I haven't taken apart anything yet, but I believe the turbo is the problem and needs replacement.

Now, as for the good, with the whole oil burning issue, I decided to take the plugs out to check them, and as long as they were out, do that compression test I'd never done on the car. Well, I think this: 199, 195, 194, 196 speaks for itself.

And for the ugly? Well, what do you guys think? New turbo, or worse?

Take the intake off the turbo inlet and check for shaft play.

Is the motor completely stock? Those numbers seem pretty high.

Assuming a stock engine, your gauge must read high, but its great they are all so close!

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

Yeah, I'm completely stock.

I've read that anywhere from 190-220 is healthy for a 4g63... I'm to assume that's wrong, then?

Anyway, I'm currently shopping under the assumption that it's T28 time.

Yep, sounds like the turbo is shot. T28 isn't a bad option, but isn't that big. If you don't have other supporting mods yet, then it is a good option. Do like Jake said and check the shaft play.

Shaft goes wiggle wiggle wiggle.

Looks like I've got the base of my new desk lamp installed in my car...

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

I was thinking a t28, actually. But with the lack of local availability I'm seeing, I may just grab a 14b.

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

I have no fuel mods, and have no real desire to start modding under the hood right now, so a 50-trim is out. I want something I can just bolt up and run at stock boost with the stock fuel system.

See, that's money that I not only don't have, but have no desire to spend. I want this to stay a reliable DD for as long as possible, and that won't be cheap if I start replacing everything.

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

I will give you my 14b for $30. It needs some O ring or gasket replaced in the compressor housing, otherwise no shaft play. And only minor cracks in the turbine housing, none go thru.

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

I had a t28, bigger injectors, AFC, and a front mount for three years and didn't break a single thing, it was a great reliable DD. That will cost quite a bit more than just a t28 upgrade. But hey, if you're sticking with stock boost, why not just replace it with another t25 for uber cheap until you're ready to do supporting mods as well?

PM'd

For clarification, because I'm not sure if I've got this all straight: For both the 14b and 16g, I'd need a 1g manifold and O2 housing, and both would bolt onto the block and downpipe fine?

No, keep your 2g mani and o2 housing. But you will need an install kit for the 16g or 14b because they have slight differences. Like you'll need a j pipe to bolt up to your stock lower IC pipe, different oil feed line I think, etc. They sell the install kit online, or it's not hard to find the individual parts yourself.

Re: Is broke, and I need a new one, right?

I had a 16G that did that once... its either the turbine touching the heat shield or the compresser wheel hitting the the compesser housing, eventually something will wear in and it will stop.
