DSM V8 swaps?
I was taking a poop one day at work, and while enjoying that relaxing moment I was reading a random auto technician mag., a guy sent in pics of a drag car he made for his wife. It was a 90-91 1G Talon with a carb'd v8 and an automatic swapped in. Never really thought about it until now. Anyone know of anyone doing this personally? Maybe if my engine and tranny blow up, or start on fire...

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
I've thought about it a few times. A nice LS1 is pretty light and you can get a nice 6-speed with it. It wouldn't be as fast as my little 2.4, but it would sound awesome.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
Yeah, LS1/T56 would be my ideal choice. I'm sure I'd have the cut up the firewall crossmember, and floor and make a tranny tunnel of some sort, but maybe i could hide it under the stock console... Maybe have the mounts on the stock crossmembers? hmm...

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
I personally think it's dumb. Just like the LS in the evo. Just dumb. There's nothing wrong with the motors we have, and if the goal is to be different, choose a different platform. Don't hack up a perfectly good car, and swap in something crazy like that. That's too much.

X2. I hate engine swaps like that. rb26 into an mk4 supra....LSX into anything you can think of.
Gets really old.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
I think it’s a GREAT idea. We have been talking about different engines and car combos and I always say we need a damn challenge. Because all we (my friends) ever do is swap Honda engines (easy and boring) or swap 6bolts/2.4Ls (again easy and boring). A V8 into a DSM would be a challenge and we would actually have to fabricate stuff and think a little bit.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
Putting an lsx or any v8 into a dsm or evo is a waste of time.
If you want straight line speed with a v8, get a camaro or mustang. AWD turbo 4 cylinder power is what these cars are famous for, why make it completely useless on anything but a straight line?

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
O I get it, He couldnt drive it around and enjoy it everyday. It would be a straight drag car, I forgot.
It wouldnt be a straight race car it would be a fun little car you could just cruise around in. And I would like to know why it would be a waste of time.

Tell me why you would want a v8 in a DSM. You can make just as much, if not more power from the 4g63, for less than it would cost to swap in an lsX, even if you did the work.
There's no good benefits to having a v8 and rwd drivetrain in a dsm compared to a tsi or gsx.

Throw a V8 into a lighter car, not a dsm.

How is it different than those who take perfectly good DSMs, part them out, and scrap the shells?

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
To each their own man. I think people end up doin crazy swaps like that when then have a dream chassis, and a dream engine, and their on 2 different platforms. With more and more people doin wierd stuff like this more often now, people sometimes just wann make their dream car. No one's making you cut up YOUR car and do something crazy w/ it, so why complain?

One word, reliability. Pop twin turbo's on a LS2, run pump gas, 700whp and be uber reliable. I don't know why that would turn it into a straight line car either, the handling should be similar to a normal car.

So then get a camaro if all you want is reliable power. I'm pretty sure if you want handling you won't be swapping an lsx into a DSM anyways. RX7's I can understand an LSX or 5.0 swap. Not DSM's.

Just because you can't understand, doesn't make it wrong. A DSM is also WAY lighter than a camaro. Especially when you get it down to just a shell.

Re: DSM V8 swaps?
I have seen millions of LS1s/V8s in RX7s everybody and thier mom has one. Why not try to be different? I dont get why its SOOO wrong to do it in a DSM? They arent that special. I mean if someone cut up a rare car or somethign then maybe but 1Gs are all over the place.
Also what if he took one of those shells that was going to the junk yard? It would be like saving the life of a DSM.

I was just going to say that it would be easier (and cost effective) to swap a V8 into a RX-7 plus I think it would work better in the long run. Swapping it into a DSM could be done and would be different but it would be way too much work and for what?
The dollar value would be the same. 4g63 are known for their free horsepower tricks. Unlike RX-7 engines which are expensive and blow up easy... not very forgiving. 4g63 very forgiving
Switching to a RWD from AWD would be a downgrade unless you wanted to set it up for DRIFT YO!!!!
To much modification and not much reward in the end....
I own a S-10 with a V8 swap and a DSM. I like them for different reason. I don't see the both coming together. I think it would ruin the DSM
