91 GS turbo FWD axel replacements

I am replacing the axels on my 91 GS turbo FWD Eclipse. I went to Advance to get replacement axels and the right one matched up pretty well but the left axels that I looked at where smaller in diameter, than my original stock one. It is also bigger than the right hand shaft on my car. I looked at three different left hand shafts and all of them where smaller diameter than mine. Is there a reason for the shaft being bigger on my car? My theory is that it is bigger in diameter because it is twice as long so it has to be bigger in diameter to have the same stiffness as the shorter shaft that is on the right hand side. In a non-turbo car this may not matter but in the turbo models I would think the larger diameter shaft would be important.
