New Computer Question

I just finished building myself a new computer and I'm having an overheating issue. When I got everything up and running and all updated, the temps for both cores were at 41*C. Then last night, I was playing the new flight simulator when I got a great blue screen. After this, my computer has been running at 57-60*C at idle. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks

What HSF did you use? This is something not to be skimped on!

Your video card may have also overheated, causing the BSOD....

HeatSinkFan Unit

make sure that bad boy is seated correctly, and that there is not too much thermal paste on there.

Re: New Computer Question

My P5N32-SLI and P4 Cedarmill @ 3.6ghz idles at 16° C

That 8-Phase Power Design should be helping with the temps but that factory thermal compound I'm not to sure about.

Re: New Computer Question

Alright thanks for all the replies, but does anyone have any clue why it would continue to run hot even after the BSOD? Before it was idling at ~41*C and now the cores idle at 58*C. Thats quite a hop.

Forgot, that's only with factory heat sink with Arctic Silver 5

Have you looked into watercooling?

Re: New Computer Question

If its your first build odds are you used wayyy too much thermal compound. You barely need to coat it, and only coat one surface (HSF surface).

Make sure the HSF fan is turning too, and that there is good airflow getting to that area of the case.

Re: New Computer Question

Well the thing is, the HSF came with the thermal compound applied to it in 3 small strips. All that was needed of me as per the instructions was to install the HSF to the CPU. I just don't know what happened.. After the BSOD the temps are now 15*C higher at idle than they were before it.

Re: New Computer Question

Something is obviously messed up between the processor and the heat sink. If they are not perfectly in contact by any amount it will overheat. Take it apart and try again.

Re: New Computer Question

Check for a change in your BIOS settings. Make sure the cooling fans are working, don't just assume they are.
