I'm going to Wyotech!
I'm taking automotive tech for 6 months and chasis and high performance engines as my 3 month elective, also thinking of adding an aditional 3 month diesel tech. elective

Congraduations.
Coming from a shop owner, I can not stress enough how important it is to achieve the proper training for the field you want to work in. Good luck!

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
A fella who graduated a year behind me in high school went to UTI in Chicago, finished the regular program, went through the Ford-specific program, and is now in Colorado at a Ford dealership making more than anyone at Jiffy Lube could ever think of making.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
I dont know anyone that has gone through the Wyotech or UTI programs and come out thinking it was money well spent.
When i worked at Toyota in arizona two of the four master techs at our dealership started off as lube techs and just worked up. Now they make about 100k/yr and they didnt have a rediculous tuition to pay off either!
Save your money, read some books, buy decent tools from the start and jump in headfirst.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
I think the money spent at dunwoody was a waste. Hell, you can start off lube tch, and work your way up in the shops I shot up, before I was even hired here at honda!

I wouldn't state that so quickly. Because of the training Chris received at Wyotech he can actually keep up here at the shop. It is one of the main reasons he even got the job. Granted I've met UTI and Wyotech trained technicians that aren't qualified to fill tires with air, but some good apples do come out of those programs.
Guys that work their way up from lube tech's can work on cars, but they rarely receive dedicated high-performance training as well as chassis fabrication background training. If you want to get into the performance industry you have to:
1)Start as a shop monkey and work your way along
2)Learn on your own. Ask any of the local dsm'ers, it isn't cheap .
3)Get proper training from a reliable and accredited facility. We have a UTI customer that just landed a job with the US Army NHRA drag team.
If you are dumber than a box of rocks, the school won't make you smart. If you have a good head on your shoulders and you go at the program like a sponge you will absorb a good amount of information. The schooling won't make you smart if you are going out there on your parents money to have a good time.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
I went to Wyotech, I graduated among the top of the class, I had the choice to go to the Porsche program, or a few other high end programs. If that is your goal, it is achievable. All you have to do it apply yourself, and its for the taking. After this one year of schooling, the people start out at one of the highest pay scales, that is the advantage to going to either Wyotech or UTI, other then the fact that you have direct access to these high end manufacturers.
Now do you leave these schools a pimp, nope(still can't beat an education + experience). But it does give you a decent foundation to start from. Mostly it raises your comfort level of working on just about anything with more confidence.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
Working on a big rig is not to hard. I have helped out my Father inlaw a few times at his place. But if you want to get dirty or really greaced up go for it. Its not bad area to learn in. But coming from a guy that went into school about computers take my 2 cents as you like. I love to learn more about the Diesel engines then I know now. And congrats on going there. Sounds like you do very well there.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
A guy I work with went there for the auto body tech program. He's severely dissapointed with what he learned there. I've also heard from several people in the industry that Wyotech is all hype, and that they don't really teach you anything usefull.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
Which wyotech school are you planning to attend? My friend is currently attending wyotech in laramie, wyoming and he hates it because the next closest town/city is about 30min away so you pretty much dont do anything :P. But other then that he seems to like it.

My good friend is also attending the same wyotech in laramie right now, and he says the same thing. Only good town is 30 mins away, but he does like it for the learning aspect.

Re: I'm going to Wyotech!
I'm going to Laramie, I dont plan on partying much so I dont see a problem.
I dont want to work on big rigs because you get so damn dirty, I did some work for the city, and working on cars and light trucks is sooo much cleaner
