Speed Shifter

Well i decided seince this looks like more of a layed back good quality forum i'd share my new poroject with you guys first. Please dont come in here flameing, constructive critisim only.

Project:

Replace the stock shift pattern with a simple up/down.
Seperate buttons for reverse and nuteral. (will include nuteral saftey switch)

To upshift:
Push in clutch
Tap shifter up
Let off clutch

Downshift is vice versa.

Yes I know other people have made this. But im trying to create a low cost alternative (under $500)

Advantages:
You cant miss a gear (better on tranny)
Shift WAY faster
Firm version for dogboxe's (dont worry about slow shift destorying tranny)
Great for autocross, easier shift
Great for dragracing, worry about everything else not missing your gear.

What do you guys think? I've got everything layed out and myself and 2 other people are working on making this real.

Re: Speed Shifter

It would be interesting to see. I'd like to see it..I'd do pull back to go to the next gear, and push forward to downshift..that's how all the pro's do it..and, it works better.

btw, nice avatar..stealer ;-)

Re: Speed Shifter

I'll make the shift up/down reversable so you can chose which one you want.

I like the idea, and I too think that would be a neat thing to have. Is it something DSMers would spend $500 on? On another note, I know RRE made some things like what you are talking about. It had a digital display to show what gear you are in.

Re: Speed Shifter

I've heard of this exact same thing being designed for the Ford Focus, but it hasn't hit production yet as it's still being tested. This would be awesome to have if it works flawlessly.

Re: Speed Shifter

It would be simular to the one RRE made. And you could add a digital display for the gear if you wanted. This one would be a quite simple hookup, maybe 15min installation. I think dsm'ers would spend a fair ammount for this, after they see how well it works.

Re: Speed Shifter

Do you have a like to the RRE setup? I've never heard of it before, but it definitely sounds like something they would come up with. Is your's going to use some sort of two axis electronic actuator system?

Why hasn't RRE pursued it yet then? They did have it years ago.

it is fun the design and computerized prototype work just fine, now it's time to build an actual prototype.

Re: Speed Shifter

Realistically I don't think it would be that hard to set up if you're good with VBA(or some other programming language) and control systems.

I know, we were toying around with this idea (using paddle shifters) a few years ago.
Fun, but I doubt re-sellable. A person can feel if the clutch pedal is hanging and if the transmission doesn't want to go into gear. A cable that is ramming a car into gear because it was "told to" has no clue that the transmission isn't "ready" for the next gear.

Re: Speed Shifter

sounds like broken shift forks waiting to happen, but after their replaced with steel ones and a double syncro 2nd It might work better... It'll be way tight and I'll give you mad props when it all works out...

Re: Speed Shifter

The box wont let the shift take place if there is too much resistance When that happens you gotta try again etc. And you still have to use the clutch.... So you could feel that.

Yeah, I think I'll hang onto the enjoyment of manually shifting my not-racecar.

Agreed; this is one of the things that I think will make the EVO X not as enjoyable. Great for a racecar, but not a fun streetcar.
