Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I'm with hughes, there's better ways to spend the money...I think that golden donkey manifold looks like shyte compared to the stock X mani....unless someone shows some crazy awesome dyno numbers from it and then like 10 more people do to I officially give it a 'meh.'

MAP Rev3, mil.spec TB, aluminum driveshaft, and some misc weight savings would be a better investment...and less impactful on teh entire setup.

Small brakes is a terrible idea.

So is changing the mani/turbo etc.

Touch stuff you haven't already.

I vote two piece rotors, alum driveshaft, and other rotational weight mods.

Dave,

Don't make me have to slap you in the nuts... Seriously let's try to drive this thing this next summer. Also, you forgot the most important mod to to invest in... the driver mod.

Sincerely,
Shawn

I say drop some weight off it too. Makes it more reliable and faster, win-win!

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Any actual dyno results showing a power gain?

I know dsm's usually picked up some decent power with a SMIM. If there are proven results and you got the money laying around I say go for it! If no results don't be the test dummy and wait it out, intake manifolds can be swapped out pretty quickly so there wouldn't be much down time besides maybe modifying your upper intercooler pipe.

Light weight stuff would help you go faster too as others have stated though.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Ok, seems most people agree on the rotational weight stuff, that is easy and safe I think.

I was just toying with the idea of a full t3 kit but it seems like most people agree to stick with the EF4 haha.

Zero results from that intake mani, so I will stick with the idea of doing the MAP rev 3 and milspec 64mm TB, those are proven.

Shawn, driver mod is #1 on my list and in order to do that I do need the car working so I guess you win, no more "big upgrades". Intake mani and tb I'll do in spring before I pull the car out of storage.

Seats are also on the list this year though. People have dropped almost 70 lbs from doing lightweight seats. Then after that I'll just workout more to lose some more weight maybe

If you can pull just 100lbs out of the car, it will be like gaining 15-20whp at your power level/vehicle weight.

Shawn, no driver mod needed. It's an X.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I just saw Ryan Gates post on FB that he now has his X down to 2550 race weight...jealous, that is like 1000lbs less than mine, I hope to get mine in the 3100 area so about 300-400 lbs less.

I haz no driver skills so I guess its good I have the X.

Losing that much weight gets expensive.

Depends on how much weight I want to lose and how I want the "street car" to remain. I could gut the car easy and cheap enough but then its straight race car.

I've got a nice light Kirkey for sale....

From previous experience trying to save weight cheap, unless you're going for a full out race car leave the creature comforts, it isn't worth it in a street/track car

Things I love:

-factory Recaros with airbags
-cruise control
-Bluetooth
-Sirius radio
-extra sound deadening
-auto climate control w/A/C
-navi
-SAWC

I'll keep my weight

The only places I would consider losing it are with a lightweight driveshaft, BBS wheels, and 2-piece brake rotors.

Something to consider, if you take out too many of the creature comforts, if/when you ever plan to sell, you just made your target market that much smaller. People like myself and most others as we all age will want them.

I still have all the creature comforts that came with the car. My car doesn't have navi or bluetooth, just the Rockford sound system, spoiler and HIDs (SSS package).

So far all I have done for weight that would affect anything really was strip my trunk out, which did get rid of the sub. But I can put all that back in.

The only thing I might do would be going to lightweight seats which could potentially bother another buyer but i will keep the stock ones.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Super bored, waiting for new black ops maps to download....so doing a throwback!

Found my old evo pics that I had to take for the lawsuit. I was like 21ish at the time, total noob, even worse than I am now if that is believable. Bought a 2005 evo with like 30k miles and paid 22.5k or so. Found out from a friend it had issues. Had to sue the dealer because they sold it as a clean title, clean carfax (found out carfax is worthless) and stock etc. I had no idea what to look for sadly, it looked ok in the back of their shop in the shaded area they showed it to me. NOte to self, never impulse buy a car!

Just for reference, it looks as though it was rolled, the front clip is from a GG car if you can tell and there are no VIN stickers on any panels (which all should have them).

I did eventually win in arbitration after 2+years. Never buy anything in Illinois, no consumer laws to protect you.

Even given all the crap I had with this car, I miss my 8, seemed so peppy even for stockish.

Edit: you will also notice on the exhaust mani heatshield, its dented, the radiator was pushed back that far. Wish I wasn't so dumb, could have a good evo 8/9 now and not sunk into an X
