header material - stainless steels

Is there a difference between T-304 and SUS 304 steel? I've seen ads from different vendors & most of their headers are advertised as being one of these two types. Anyone noticed this before or checked into if there is a real difference?

Also, what is a good minimum (or maximum) material thickness?

This has been gone over in the past, but for a turbo manifold you really should use 321 stainless. It is superior to 304 for this application. O2 housing, DP and exhaust 304 is great. Stress relief is key to a good manifold. 95% of the tubular manifolds out there are not made properly. Stick with a cast manifold unless you are way up there in hp (600+ whp).

He drives a N/t Jet. I don't think the same rules apply to him since he isn't running a turbo :P

the question is about material - not engine type. if you know any difference between the two then contribute to the thread & not get sidetracked

Re: header material - stainless steels

If you're wasting your time on a non-turbo application, who cares what material you're using, the heat generated is not high enough to matter. Any stainless is plenty good for the 900 degree temps of a non-turbo application. Quit wasting our time with bullshit.

Maybe you should specify your engine type so people can give you an application appropriate answer...hmmmm.

goat, keep your petty judgments to yourself. no one needs your negativity. if u got nothin positive to say then STFU.

no one said it was for a turbo app. this was actually from a discussion had between several people who had different cars. stop your dayum presumptions about MY car. aint nobody on here to "waste your time" unless i forced you to read this thread. did that happen??? next time keep moving along to the next thread.

kracka, again my question is not so much about application as it is just trying to know if ANYONE knows if there is a difference in the materials. the main question was: "is there a difference between T-304 and SUS 304 steel?"

i have searched on several sites & talked about it with others (which was what really sparked the curiosity), but have not found anything which truly describes one versus the other. i have read & heard several discussions which suggest using 321 instead of 304 SS, but i just wondered what this T304 versus SUS 304 was. THAT was basically what i wanted to know.

ya know all this friggn NT-hating that josh, goat, et. al. do is pretty immature, irritating & doesn't do diddlyshit to help resolve issues/quesitons.
i never saw on this forum that it was for "turbos only" or "only ppl with turbos could pose questions". their views seem myopic & ignorant. surely not eveyryone on here is that way, but ppl like them make "amusing fodder"

to the 1 or 2 that maybe tried helping(?) thanks, but i'm out!

Re: header material - stainless steels

Bye BTW, I drive an N/A car too. People don't care so much about what you drive, its how you act. You came stompin' in here like you own the place and you are the greatest gift this board has ever seen. Trust me, we've seen your kind plenty and if history repeats itself your welcome is pretty much used up.

With a simple Google search, I believe they are the same thing:

What have people told you in the thread you posted about this on Toonerz?

Re: header material - stainless steels

We just built a manifold for my buddy using Sch 10 bends. Turned out pretty nice, and over the next winter I'll probably be making one for myself.

Re: header material - stainless steels

321 is better than 304, for exhaust manifolds (especially with sustained high heat applications). This made me wonder some stuff, so yes, I whipped out my Machinery's Handbook. I read alll about different types of stainless steels; 304 is a low carbon version of 302. 304N is the stongest 304 you can get. blah blah blah. Just make a header out of Inconel and be done hahaha.
