Re: Engine Oil
Yea prolly not from the oil, but Mobil 1 and Castrol syntec are what I use.
Audi just got fresh oil a couple weeks ago. Syntec 5w-40.

Re: Engine Oil
I change my oil filter every 3500 miles and change the oil itself at 10500 miles.
I suppose I could send a few samples off to Blackstone just for arguing rights. I have a full change coming up in 1000 miles.
First sample: 50 miles after a full change
2d and 3d samples: 50 miles after filter changes
4th sample: 50 miles before the next full change

Re: Engine Oil
Im using Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic and its working great. Keeps the lifters quiet and really looks decent after 3k with a Pure One filter. Im suprised that people didnt catch on to the diesel oil sooner. If it can handle a giant tractor turbo, my little evo 3 is a walk in the park. I have been using it for a year now and couldnt be happier.

Re: Engine Oil
I used nothing but Rotella on my old stock motor. But with the new motor I was using mainly synthetics. I had no reason to think oil quality has gone down until I read that article, which now has me back to using diesel oils.

Re: Engine Oil
Oh btw, stock oil change intervals on the Audi are 15K. I wont be doing that... probably twice a year regardless of miles. Maybe every 7k.

Go for the factory interval! Send a sample in after 6 months and see how its doing before changing it.

I would but leaving the filter in for 15k seems a bit risky? I dunno, just seems crazy. lol

Shouldn't be an issue as long as you're using a quality filter like the OEM one from the dealership. Does the A4 use the same canister style filter element that the Jetta GLI does? Those are known to last longer than your typical self-contained filters.

Yeah, the 2.0T's have the canister style on the side of the block if I remember.
15k?? Thats nuts! I ran Valvoline 10w30 in my laser up until recently. I switched to Valvoline full synthetic 10w30 and boy did it leak the oil. lol

Re: Engine Oil
Yea it has a stupid canister mounted at an angle... so when you take if off and dont have the special bleed tool for it, oil spills all over. Sweet design! lol
The M had a canister right on top of the engine. So much easier.

That was the best oil filter design I've ever seen.

Re: Engine Oil
Well, I picked up some Rotella 10w-30 that was CJ-4 rated, so it should be pretty good. And also a WIX filter, which according to a friend at O'Reilly's are the best ones they stock, after they took about 10 different brands and cut them apart to see which ones were the best.

Re: Engine Oil
i dont understand why people dont run diesel oil more in turbo charged cars cause it has an additive to stop the soot from entering the oil and it has an additive to help with the lifters and everything. Deadeye Good choice on the oil. Rotella is some of the best out there. as long as you run a good filter like a mobil 1 or a purolator pure one you shouldnt really have an issue. synthetic oil is the way to go now of days cause when regular oil breaks down synthetic oil just starts to work. the choice is yours and yours alone but i would say rotella 5w40 synthetic and a pure one filter.

Re: Engine Oil
well i dont know alot of guys that start up the car and go making freeway pulls or race people while the engine is cold. 5w 40 is the synthetic oil that rotella makes. you can use this oil all winter long also. That is why i say 5w40

Re: Engine Oil
5W-40 is a year-round oil just like 10W-30 generally is. The reason the US uses 10W-30 instead is for better fuel economy. 5W-40 is fairly widely recommended outside North America instead of our 10W-30. Having close viscosity ratings is beneficial though for other reasons such as less chemicals/more oil and better sheer stability; everything has its pros and cons.

Re: Engine Oil
I ran into this test on another board, seemed informative enough to post here, especially considering it contradicts things I've been told by other members.
