Re: Simply brilliant - mosque @ Ground Zero
Oh jeeze, religion.
Super anti-religion people (read: Bill Maher, Tom, etc) are some of the biggest hypocrites I know.
You people keep crying about how religion exists, and that it's all so FUCKING stupid, etc etc. Basically just trying to push YOUR BELIEFS of anti-religion onto other people (doing the same thing that a lot of you are crying about). While a majority of the time people aren't trying to convert you to Christianity or something as a defense, but simply tell you to shut up and let people be. I never see posts, or really much of anything coming from people that say "Christianity is the only way to to, I hate all other people!" As long as you respect other peoples beliefs (which you clearly don't) they will respect yours. Stop being such an ass hole about what someone wants to have faith in. It's not your call to tell them it's not true.

People on both sides of the debate are calling it a mosque. What do you call a place a bunch of Christians go to pray? A church. What do you call a place a bunch of muslims go to pray? A mosque. Calling it by a different name is just splitting hairs if you ask me.

The "mosque" is being financially backed by a terror-group supporter

Re: Simply brilliant - mosque @ Ground Zero
Good opinion letter from the the Star Tribune:
Quote:
Having spent nearly two years of my life in an Arab Muslim nation and having extensively studied the principles of the Qur'an, I feel that I am somewhat qualified to address Ahmed Tharwat's assertion in his Sept. 1 commentary ("The inescapable conclusion: Americans hate Muslims") that Americans "oppose the building of an Islamic center" and that their "sudden obsession with ground zero as a hallowed site is idolatrous."
I can't speak for most Americans, and neither can Tharwat. But I can speak for the facts of what most Americans see in this country: a diverse country of all ethnic groups, all religions, virtually all walks of life ever imagined in the universe, living, working, playing, praying, and marrying, all for the purpose of living in freedom, thriving in liberty, and enjoying the pursuit of happiness. Americans see millions of people just like Tharwat, who hope to come to this country for a new life, whether they come here legally or illegally.
What Americans don't see in this country are Baptists killing other Baptists, or Catholics torturing Jews, or Muslims beheading Lutherans. As imperfect as Tharwat claims America to be, it remains a country that is mostly tolerant in almost every category of life.
But what do Americans (and other nationalities) see in the Arab Muslim world? What do other Arabs and Muslims see in their world? They see Sunnis and Shiites killing each other, and they see attempts to exterminate Kurds. All this is done in several countries. All this is done for the sake and in the name of religion.
The practice of both men and women strapping on explosives in the hope of killing and maiming as many innocent people as possible has become a daily occurrence in the Arab, Persian, Muslim world. A daily occurrence! Recently it has been reported that young children have been recruited to lure the unsuspecting victims into a death trap. For what reason? Why do they do this to their own kind? Perhaps Tharwat should reflect on these questions and present the "idolatrous Americans" with answers.
It's easy for Tharwat to write his dissenting view of Americans and be able to live freely without harm or malice. But in the Arab, Muslim countries I'm familiar with, such dissenting views would earn him (and most likely his family and friends) immediate imprisonment, certain torture and possible death.

If you read in that article, the guy who invested did so believing the organization was legitimate. Honestly, who knows where any of our money is going when donating to international charity organizations(Peoples pockets/corruption, weapons, actually feeding people?..). As a Muslim, if you don't trust your own charity organizations to do the right thing with God as a witness, then you got problems. Most people who are nice enough to donate money, do so with great intentions. If unfortunately that organization does something wrong with that money, God have mercy on their soul.. That is basically cheating the needy.. One of the biggest sins you can commit under God.

Not so great opinion. It's a very one sided view of things. It's very easy to pull out some things a very small percentage of radicals are doing and condemn an entire religion. Like I have mentioned before, the majority of Muslims in this world are moderate peace loving people. However what most Muslims have in common is we take our Religion seriously. It's not something we take on by name only and not practice.. We practice. When you have a large majority who practice, there will be a small minority who take their "dedication" too far(to an "extreme").. thus stuff like this happens. When the majority of Christians actually followed their religion by the Book, they fought for their cause as well(and you can look at the documented violence associated with that). Like it or not, understand it or not, condone it or not(I do not), these people believe in their hearts they are doing what is right in Gods eyes.
There is a lot of other violence going on in this world for much worse reasons(drugs, money, power etc etc). Take a quick look at South America and many countries in Africa and eastern Europe. For some reason they don't get the press the middle eastern countries do(probably because the middle easterners own the oil America wants), but there are very very very nasty things, and murders(by alarming rates) happening as I type this to civilians, women and children.
If you want to point fingers to different parts of the world, point them evenly. As one heinous crime isn't worse then another by a different method just because it's in the mass media.

Re: Simply brilliant - mosque @ Ground Zero
Just thought id bring this back from the dead.
NPR fired a journalist because he made "bigot" comments, according to them. Unbelievable.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot...remarks-on-fox
My favorite part of the article, is this:
""So Juan Williams is fired for saying something the liberals at NPR find controversial?" Goldberg said. "One more piece of evidence that liberals have forgotten how to be liberal."
Goldberg continued: "These are the kind of people who brag about how open-minded they are -- as long as you agree with them. And here's the dirty little secret: lots and lots of liberals feel the same way Juan does when they get on an airplane. And a lot of those liberals work at NPR. Juan's 'crime' was saying it out loud."
Weekly Standard Editor and Fox contributor Bill Kristol also had some choice words for NPR, which he dubbed "National Politically-correct Radio." Kristol concluded a post about the firing by saying: "NPR -- unfair, unbalanced ... and afraid.""

Re: Simply brilliant - mosque @ Ground Zero
Anyone else noticing this "Issue" Fizzling out? Yeah welcome to the republican politics, Raise a huge issue, make a big fuss, then move on and try and find another so called huge issue. Republicans a year ago had no objection to this whole thing until it came time for elections.
Sad thing is that the democrats and Obama fell right into the trap.
