One of my friends over there is in the Army National Guard...notice he is over there and not in school. They pulled him out mid-semester.

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
Good point. I wonder how he is doing. He prolly ain't thinking about snow...or maybe he is.
I'm not saying going to Iraq would suck. I am saying that you should want to go to a "war-zone" (whatever). If you don't somehow go to Iraq you can be happy about that, but if you do have to go, don't be pissed. It would actually be fun if you did have a shit job to do. Paper work in the desert is a shit job. Room clearing with the "Scouts"; not a bad way to spend a year+

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
I think if I went, I'd want to actually be in the battle whether in the air or on the ground.
I keep pondering the idea of what it would be like if I rejoined the Air Force or went Army...

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
A good friend of mine was off to college for about a month when he got the word that he was going to be deployed. They put everything on hold and when he got back he started school right where he left off.

Yes, you get to build vacation and get any raises from your job while you are gone too, that is pretty sweet. Also you get any profit sharing that you would have normally gotten.

Damn, that actually sounds pretty nice. Almost makes a guy wonder if there are any cool jobs in the reserves.....almost.

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
Yeah, I didn't realize any of that except I found out about the building vacation part. My company hadn't given me anything while I was at basic/AIT. They wouldn't do anything about it either, so I talked to the administrative guy at our unit. Within a week 3 guys in suits showed up at the office, it was the JAG. Needless to say I got my vacation time, a raise and 2 profit sharing checks

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
Both Iceminion and I put a years worth over in Iraq already. Both of us are in the National Guard. Things you should know:
1. You will get deployed. (I got sent to Iraq 2 weeks after I got back from AIT...Into another unit, doing a completely different job.)
2. It will be inconvenient. (0400...yeah)
3. There will be more bullshit then you can ever think of. (If you don't find some you're blind, deaf, and dumb)
4. ...Gotta go to class now. (After 2 years of trying to get to it)
On a lighter note though I get 100% tuition reimbursement from the feds up front, another 100% from the state afterwards, and the GI bill which comes out to be the equivelent pay of my part time job.

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
I know the inconvenientness? of it. I had to wake up once at 3:45 and it was noo good at all. I saw some of the BS too, doing the underwear olympics for the physical. The "Senior" doctor got to have to lower guy do all the stuff and he was like his little dog. The benifits sound wayy nice though.

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
Yes there is a ton of BS. Yes it is hot and there are creepy animals. Yes it's dangerous. But I wouldn't do anything different if I had to do it all over again. You'll make some of the best friends you'll ever have, you'll be with them through thick and thin, you'll have a sense of accomplishment that I feel is unmatched by anything else, and you'll know that you have made a difference in this world, and that you have done what most people will never be able to say they have. You get to visit beautiful places and do things that no other people your age would be able to experience, like flying in a chopper with the doors off, feet hanging out the sides, and blowing shit up with some badass weapons, legally. And if you plan things right, your time in the military will have paved you a great path for a successful future.
It's tough, no doubt about it. But I think being in the military is a great thing and that everyone could benefit from being in it. All the BS you go through, all the times you sit there and wonder "Why the hell didn't I just go to college", in the end it'll be worth it!

Re: I'm probably going into the army reserves
little bit of everything. Sometimes you hate it because it's hot and there's a deadly spider crawlin around in your tent. But sometimes you see some beautiful scenery that makes you say it's all worth it.
