Re: Where do you buy transmission parts?
I have always sent Shep my trannies.....stock, mild or wild. As for $900 being a lot....how much does a dealership or tranny shop charge? Up to $2000 right. And you know they usually only replace bad parts. Shep replaces EVERYTHING, builds it tight like Mitsu should have, double syncro 2nd and only charges $900. Hella deal in my book to get it built once for lifetime or save a couple hundred, try it yourself, just to not be able to shift at 8k and pay some more to do it again.
He has his secrets to making the DSM tranny work right. I have never seen any local person match his knowledge....he's been racing DSMs for over a decade now. It's usually only a 2-3 week turnaround too. Not too long IMO.
And as for a daily driver that shouldn't send it to Shep......I can't count the number of daily driver DSMs that grind into the gears even after a rebuild. There is a lot more to a rebuild than what you think to make it work right and last. Sure you could slap it together and it may work ok for a bit. But consider what a professional rebuilder takes into account. Bearing clearances, shaft free play, teeth contact patterns, gear alignment, correct parts, less prone to overlooking details. Not flaming any rebuild shop, but he is the fastest DSM and builds the best known trannies bar none.
Just make sure you get a good warranty with any local rebuilder, and read any fine print. If the rebuild works out for you, you score a couple hundred.
