Honda Insight. I drive over 100 miles a day and pay less for gas than most people. Car gets over 50 mpg and is comfortable. I am fat and I took it with a friend to Washington, DC this summer (over 18 hour drive) without issues.
I agree with the above people that to me, a dd is a car you will not modify. I have had similar experiences where the further I modify a car, the less reliable it gets, and the more I am working on it. That is what took the fun out of DSMs for me.
If you plan on keeping the car for a while, an insight is a good choice. I figured I would save $3500 per year in gas when gas was $2.30 per gallon. The more gas rose, the more I would save. I have had the car for over 3 years now and haven't had to do anything but tires and oil changes. The car has already paid for it self in gas but I also got $3000 for hail damage which I didn't fix

This car is definitely my smartest buy.
I 2nd or 3rd that an evo may be a crappy idea as a DD.
