The car has been down and hasn't moved since April 2013. The new OEM Mitsu oil pump has a bad leak and Andrew lost motivation/drive to fix it. Otherwise, the car ran awesome and put down some serious power on pump gas. He was around 475 WHP @ Cobb when the fuel/fuel pump began to overheat requiring the tuning session to come to an end that day; the plan was to go back once he replaced the pump with something that runs cooler (like a DW300) and fixed what was a minor oil leak at the time...and then shortly after turned into a serious leak from the oil pump as mentioned above. He's since inherited his dad's C5 Corvette which has become his fun weekend toy. In the meantime, the Evo sits, and will likely continue to sit unfortunately. I'm slowly working on him though...I've offered to pay Cobb to fix it for him if he uses his AAA to get it towed there under the agreement he'd eventually pay me back

e98 i guess is way better stuff obviously then e85 is what people say, but the price difference out the barrel is huge! at $1.70 for e85 right now you could get 55gallons at a bit under a hundred bux. So my question then map sells 55gallons for 340 roughly of e98 about 6 bux a GALLON...race gas is 7.50 last i checked...and now im not sure what the octane rating is for e98 i believe 105 or thats what i read on e98.com....110 at 7.50 is way more convenient i think then having a flamable drum in your garage...so what are the advantages to e98...this isnt a tech thread but figured it would be a quick response

E98 = a known, consistent product of 97.5-98.0% ethanol and 2.0-2.5% natural gasoline denaturant, no mystery sludge blend rates to make anywhere from E50 to E85...but generally in the E70-E80 range. E98 octane rating is going to be more like ~115, while E85 will be 105ish (but completely variable depending on the blend, and what was used for the blend).
If you can find an actual supplier or blender to barrel the straight E98 for you, it would be MUCH cheaper than what the race gas suppliers are selling it for; I'm talking well under $2/gal with the right connections.

Ethanol should not be compared on a straight octane rating either. Even "shitty" e85 from a pump still out performs most high octane fuels out there on high boosted applications like evos. The cooling properties to keep cylinder temps down are huge. Ethanol is awesome for anti detonation properties, so its not really comparable. Most shops will vote even crappy e85 all day long over most any race gas as its just better (assuming you don't get stuck with e50, but e70 is still great stuff) and its way more convenient to get as its at the gas station.

The biggest problem with pump E85 are it's inconsistencies, but a competent tuner should be able to build enough margin for error in to accommodate for it.

not to mention many applications can use flex fuel sensors now> i have my flex fuel setup awaiting tephra to finish the code/testing for it, can't wait
But yes, I agree on both parts. A tuner familiar with e85 shouldn't have issues with these inconsistencies as you tune to the lower denominator.

Quite true, great advancements for sure! A real FlexFuel compatible tune would be amazing in an Evo. So with Tephra getting this implemented, I'd imagine you just get a tune on 93, and a tune on real E85, and the ECU automatically interpolates between the two maps as needed based on sensor readings?

That is the idea I believe. But I don't know how much you can control for e levels. I would want anything above 70% to be basically balls out but below that be much much safer as I am just putting regular gas in for distance at that point not performance. I'd have ot ask how all that will work but that is the general concept.
