Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

Can anyone confirm whether the cam caps on are labeled on DSM heads for retaining them in their original location? I was thinking that they aren't labeled from what I recall of my spare 6 bolt head but I could easily be mistaken.

Thanks

Re: Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

I know they are labeled. It says if they are on the intake side or exhaust side and what numer they are in order. You also want to keep the arrows on them pointed outward to make sure they are not put on backwards.

Me- "I don't think you would stand a chance."
Cop says "probably not" and drives off.

Labeled E for exhaust side and I for intake. Arrows face towards timing belt. Numer 1 being the closest to belt.

BTW Make sure you keep sparkplugs in while you are messing with them, the little cap bushings like to fall into the cylinders.

Actually, the arrows on the exhaust cam caps point away from the timing belt. The arrows on the intake cam caps point towards the timing belt.

Re: Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

Any arrow in the engine usually faces toward the timing belt OR front of the engine. It has been that way since the dawn of time. Pistons in a 350 SBC....arrows face forward, cam caps 2.0L Mitsu....arrows face timing belt (front of motor), Main and rod caps.....arrows face timing belt. But I can't remember right off the top of my head (shop manual says nothing), but like Goat Blower said...the cap numbers should all read from the thermostat side of the head. Except the end exhaust one....it says nothing. But you may be right....have to look into that next head yank.

Re: Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

By process of elimination it is not that dificult. I figured it out myself in the garage. The numbers start with one at the front (t-belt side of the motor) and are labled. Jakey, if you have the head, set them all out in a pile and you should be able to figure it out. I have done it a few times.

Re: Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

I used to have a diagram written with marker on my workbench back in the day. Now it seems self-explanatory, although I've probably worked on 30 heads since then.

Re: Cam Cap Numbering/Labeling

I just did my cams about 1 month ago after i upgraded to HKS 272's. E1 and I1 start at the timing belt. Each cam cap is labeled. If you position the head so the cam sensor side is towards you and the timing belt side away from you, the cam caps would go on so you could read the E1, E2, E3, etc.. in that way. If you got the timing belt side towards you and you can read the cam caps, then you have them on the wrong way. If you got them on the right way that i say, the arrows will be pointing the right direction.
