The transfer case has to come off to clear the flywheel. The flywheel would hit and stop at the transfer case.

The transfer case will slide off the end of the driveshaft. Nothing else holds it in. Just take it off. Have something to catch the fluid.

Pulling the t-case is easy. I usually find a block of wood to rest the driveshaft on. Note that in most situations, you will need to drop the down pipe to gain access to the t-case.

BTW, I can drop a tranny fairly quickly out of a 2g AWD but putting it back in has always been a struggle for me.
