Re: 91 Galant VR4

I will work on some pics but the race car is done for the year. I have 2 spare blocks and heads I am bringing to MAP along with my custom CP pistons and Custom Carrillo rods and many other parts and I want a motor that will handle 850AWHP for a season by spring time.

Also on 10-28-2012 at 7;36AM we had our baby girl: Liana Zoey LaCroix. So the race car is on hold for the winter and I want to get out ASAP for NHRA license passes and the Galant VR4 record in ET.

I think with a track that spins a little my setup will do what I want then let it be, enjoy the car again before it sits waiting to decimate our Liana's boy friends car 16 years from now. I better look up how to make some moon shine.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

I feel bad not many up dates here. Any dang way, I tore down the race motor, everything but the singed deck surface (block), blown out deck surface on the #3 cylinder in the head and the broken front ear on the block was perfect... IDK on that one. And the 50psi in 3rd gear, 11.3 A/F on E98 was to much, lifted the head and the MLS gasket and cylinder pressure did the rest.

So my new plan is drop off the MAP stage 5 head, all welded up, and a stock head, all my valve train, the hurt block with 3/4 fill of hard block and a stock block with my custom CP pistons and custom Carrillo rods to have a motor put together that will handle 850+ AWHP for a season on E98.

Other then the motor I plan to get the car out again on the slicks, E98, 45psi, new tranny parts to make sure it shifts into 2nd and 4th holds up, and a parachute on the back. No major changes to the setup other wise, I think 875AWHP at MAP will be enough to do what I what.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

Tranny parts ordered, and I need to get down to MAP ASAP for the motor work, then a quick refresh on the tune for spring.

I will spin the car around in the garage and start on the parachute mount later this week.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

Yes I had the block o ringed before last year, and with the MLS gasket worked great until I turned the boost up a little to high

I had been running around 39-40psi on E98 and towards the end of last year I wanted to see a little more. So the night we drove all over to all the good hang outs and what have you I upped it to 43psi, car felt good so I figured up it to 45ish, but the car made 50psi of boost and lifted the head.

So the MLS gasket in the #3 cylinder on the intake side turned into a blow torch and made short work of the cylinder head and gasket, burt the o ring and singed the deck surface....

This was the 2nd full pull of 2012, I think at 29psi we ended up making 650, then traction issues and other problems ended the dyno sessions with no solid numbers, but based on logs the car was making more power per PSI then 2011 when it made 947AWHP at DB at 44psi.

Not a DD but a streatable race car, I did take it to CUB late one night when Alison needed something from the store.

Her is the little one that has been my focus for the last 4 some months, it is a great thing to be a father, and I hope to give little Liana everything I can. And someday as much I hate to say it I should learn how to distill moon shine so Liana can beat her boyfriends car in a race.

Liana in her baptism out fit knitted by my mom.

The blow out went into the intake runner, so this is the first stage of welding the MAP stage 5 head back up, filling in the floor.

I then stood the head up on end and started building up the deck surface, I will check with a sonic tester to make sure its thick enough before the head goes back on, then I filled in the out side hole, there should still be a small opening for coolant flow on that side. And after decking and putting in new intake valve seats this head should be good to go.

After some talking with my friend Andy I noticed in my logs my voltage would drop to 13.x for a short time then go back up to 14+. We talked and he thought I might be over spinning the alternator and causing voltage issues. So we cut down a factory alternator pulley and welded a factory water pump pulley to it, and this will reduce the alternator rpm by a lot. From what I could find it might spin a little slow at idle but be a lot closer to the peek alternator rpm then over driven by a ton.

And if it does not work, I have a few other factory pulleys and I can just swap it out.

Mains and Rod bearing could be used again, but new ones will be installed, cylinder walls looked great also.

This is the comparison of the 2010 to 2011 pistons from CP. They inspected the 2010 pistons and changed the out shape and machine processes, and the piston skirt wear was reduced by A LOT, and they added more gas ports for the top ring, 6 instead of 4.

Nothing but the best, super easy instal, rock solid performance and easy removal during rebuilds.

With the custom Carrillo rod I can not be happier, the straight I beam, 3/8" CARR rod bolts, wider small end and crazy NASCAR spec balance with the pistons.... I sent them back also and I have full CMM specs and they are EXACTLY the same as when they were produced, crazy.

Here is a pic of my car launching at the line at the Muscle Car Shoot out at BIR from 2012, the track had way to much bite for my setup, I made 1 full pass and broke 5 rear axels in that event.

So I ordered some tranny refresh parts from JACKS. I hope this gives me close to a season of use.

I am replacing the evo 3 4th gear, I dont make the torque as Mark does but this gear has 2 years on it.

I am also replacing the 2nd gear synchro, if the car spins it has and will lock me out of 2nd, not a bad thing but I figure just to be safe. and also I will switch back to only 1/2 quart Redline shock proof light and the rest mitsu tranny fluid, JACKS is pretty sure the red line shock proof will cause synchros to fail. IDK I only stripped a used final drive late 2010.

I do have the car spun around so the next week or 2 I can start on chute mount and what not.

It's too bad the head lifted and caused all that damage. Good call on the proactive transmission work. Looking good.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

Ya I built this trans for the car before spring of 2010. I stripped a final drive and wore out the 3/4 synchros and a hand full of shift forks. So I did a full tear down and ordered another 3/4 synchro a new 1/2 hub and slider, new cut engagement 2nd gear, new 1/2 and 3/4 synchro dog keys and lucky for me I found a almost new 3/4 hub and slider in my parts pile.

So for sure my trans will be up to snuff for proving grounds 1 and 2.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

All my new tranny parts showed up, and I picked up a used tranny with evo 3 stuff in side, it hurt the intermediate shaft and 4th gear so I have some extra parts and will buy a new intermediate shaft to fix this tranny for a back up this year.

I also dropped off my new block, MAP stage 5 head, and all the parts needed to make a good long block minus cams at MAP so they can build me a motor to handle 875AWHP for the season.

I plan for my car to be at the track for the MAP proving grounds late June, see you then.

I am going to re make my heat exchanger tank and use my old radiator as my heat exchanger up front.

Here are the new tranny parts, I am going to run 2 quarts Mitsu MTF 75w 85 and the rest shock proof light gear oil.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

Getting a slow start on the season, o well. I have 1 tranny complete, and the other one just needs to be re-assembled. The motor is hard blocked, and honed .020" over for the pistons, and the mains are line honed. Now I just need to port the hard block to get water flowing, bring the block down to MAP to get the orings cut into the deck surface. The head is welded up, we cut the intake valve seat out(new one coming) and its been decked, nice and flat again. I have 3 new exhaust valves coming, 3 were bent from last year and we will do a valve job and then put the motor together. I have new rings, bearings, wrist pins, and all new gaskets coming. The clutch is still holding up and I have 6 rear axels for the track.

The plan is get the block done asap and I figure I need a weekend to get the car together and driving, then break the motor in, and head to a AWD dyno to check the tune and I will not run any more then 45psi this year, I liked driving around at 41-42psi it moves good at that power level.

One step at a time, and if I do not make the MAP proving grounds the 21st of this month I will plan to make the one later this year.

Re: 91 Galant VR4

I took last year off and spent time with my baby girl Liana.

And over this winter we made some major changes to the car. Some have worked, others not so much.

The short list: -12 fuel feed line from tank to rail, then -10 from rail to regulator. I also installed a KB boost a pump.

The turbo was replaced also, it's now a Borg Warner Billet 76 with the 83mm turbine and a 1.00 divided t4. Non ball bearing but spools the same has my Garrett gt4202 did.

I now have 2 fully built trans with fresh synchros. And we adjusted the clutch for max release.

I also updated safety stuff. A parachute with integrated licsense plate mount for street driving.

I 're fabricated some stuff under the hood, the catch can with drain back into the block works perfect.

The short block is the same, but larger .051 safety wire sticking .010-.012 out and a fresh felpro permatorque gasket .

I welded the head up, and a new valve seat was installed. A new set of exhaust valves, a good valve job and the port work was redone.

The Car is using a EBC now and will have an E85 tune and a E98 tune.

I installed a push button on my parking brake lever for my 2 step.

I also fabed some more stuff trying to get the weight down more. I will post pics and more details after this weekend.

We tried the chassis dyno and had good luck at lower boost but had traction or clutch issues at high boost. So we will finish the tune at the track and the streets of Mexico.
