State Trooper Troubles Anyone??

There is a law against police harrassment. When I had my red 98 GSX "dsm=race car". I got pulled over once. I was coming into downtown off of 55 by the metrodown. The speed limit I believe goes from 50 to 30 fairly quick. I was behind a cop and was obeying all traffic laws. He pulled over to the side and I passed him, then pulled out behind me with his lights on. He walked up to the window and I had everything all ready for him, but this guy was a dick! He shoved the paper work at me and told me to step out of the car. I questioned him, then was forced out. Now the cop is illegally searching my car with me calmly sitting at the curb. After he didn't find anything he wrote me a ticket for driving with headphones on. I did not have headphones on/ or in my car so I was like WTF! Any ways long story short, I got out of the ticket. The reason I got out is cause I filed a complaint on the way I was treated and the illegal search (that was legal/probabale cause). Also If i got pulled over again by a MNPLS police officer for no apparent reason, I could sue the city for harassment.

So like others have said file a complaint with the city and stop bitching to the forums. If you get pulled over its definetly for a reason as cops have to do paperwork ticket or no ticket.

Everyone gets it already man, it is a fact of life. Discrimination is a reality of life, if you think you got it bad think about what people with darker skin color have had to endure through the ages. You act like you're so oppressed when in reality you are really lucky...you have multiple cars, a place to work on them, and some tint issues. Don't sell your car, just buck up

I drive a a loud, black car with a giant wing on the back and HIDs pointed way too high, usually traveling 5 mph or so over the speed limit.

I've had my plate run 3 times in the past week, this is more than usual but because of the time of year the extra patrols are understandable.

I haven't been pulled over since May of 2010.

A couple tips for avoiding tickets. I've been pulled over 3 times in the 3 months I've had my Ralliart, and avoided tickets each time. The only ticket I've ever gotten was when I was 18 and I didn't know what I know now.

Traffics stops are surprisingly one of the most common causes of injury or death for officers and state troopers. Safety is the number one concern for them as they're coming up to your car. Keeping that in mind there are a number of things you can do that will help keep them safe, and maybe make them a little more forgiving.

1) Pull over far enough for them to approach the window. Yes, there is a law that states you must move over one lane if you can when an officer in on the side of the road. However, this doesn't always happen. The more room you can give them to stand away from traffic, they will appreciate it.

2) Turn the car off and place the keys on the dash there they are visible. Knowing that you're not going to try to back up and run them over, or speed off is another thing off their list of things to worry about.

3) Have your ID and insurance ready to go when they get to your car. Next time you get pulled over, look where the office had their hands as the approach your car. It's on their belt, so that they're ready to draw their gun if they need it. If you can avoid moving your hands to a place where they can't see them, the safer you both are. So make sure you've already gotten in to your wallet, purse, or glove box before they get to your car.

4) Keep you hands where they can see them. The wheel is always a good place for this.

5) If it's dark, turn your dome lights on. This way they can see in to your car easier and know that it is safe. Also, if you can, try to pull over in a place where a street light is coming in to the front of your car, or in to a parking lot there there is a lot of light.

6) MN has concealed carry laws. If you're armed, let the officer know. They will instruct you on how they want to handle the situation. They may asked you give them the weapon until they have finish, they may simple thank you for informing them. Let them decide what they want to do.

7) Be very clear and deliberate about what you're doing. Say for example, you didn't have time to reach in to your glove box for your insurance card. Before doing this say to the officer, "I'm going to open the glove box and get my insurance card."

Only if you're talking about the driver and passenger windows. The rest of the glass on a truck/suv or van is exempt from the law that applies to cars. Which may be why you never see one pulled over for a window tint violation. Not sure how you would know what they were being pulled over for anyway. The other thing is the subject of this thread was State Troopers. I have NEVER had a Sheriff's Deputy or City Cop ding me for my tint. Troopers must have a mandate from high up that the tint law will be enforced with prejudice.

Lets play "Fix That Incorrect Post"!

No truck/van/SUV is exempt from the window tint law. The way the law is written is that if - any vehicle from the factory with windows tinted is exempt from local state laws. Most trucks/SUVs come with tinted windows except for the front two, and so they are exempt.

Want to change the law? Become the owner of a car maker and tint all the windows. That is the way to get around the law.

Mostly great advice except these two.

Do NOT go reaching in your pockets/jacket/glove box for your ID, insurance etc. They see you digging around or leaning over to grab something out of your glove box it makes them very nervous. I have always waited until they ASK for these things. Some times they wont even ask if they plan to give you a warning. They seem to appreciate it. If/when they ask, just tell them what you're going to do and do it with your hands as visible as possible.

Pull over as soon as you can safely do so and keep your hands high on the wheel. Don't bother with your dome light, that's silly. If you've been pulled over at night you know full well that their spotlight does an excellent job of illuminating your entire interior. The added light from your interior lights is hardly noticeable.

And with the street lights etc. Just pull over when they light you up. If they wanted to wait for the ideal spot to pull you over they would have waited to pull you over. Again, they've got the lights covered. Taking an extra 10 seconds to pull into a parking lot is just going to piss them off and make them wonder why you didn't just pull over. ie what did they just try to stuff under the seat while they were screwing around pulling into a parking lot.

I've always just turned the light on, rolled down my window asap, and kept my hands on the steering wheel until the police officer came to the window. Then I grabbed the paper work once they asked for it.

(a) No person shall drive or operate any motor vehicle

(4) when any material has been applied after August 1,
1985, to any motor vehicle window without an accompanying permanent marking which indicates the percent of transmittance and the percent of reflectance afforded by the material. The marking must be in a manner so as not to obscure vision and be readable when installed on the vehicle.

(b) This subdivision does not apply to glazing materials
which:

(1) have not been modified since the original installation,
nor to original replacement windows and windshields, that were originally installed or replaced in conformance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205;

(2) are required to satisfy prescription or medical needs
of the driver of the vehicle or a passenger if the driver or
passenger is in possession of the prescription or a physician's statement of medical need; or <-------------

(3) are applied to:

(i) the rear windows of a pickup truck as defined in
section 168.011, subdivision 29;

(ii) the rear windows or the side windows on either side
behind the driver's seat of a van as defined in section 168.011, subdivision 28;

(iii) the side and rear windows of a vehicle used to
transport human remains by a funeral establishment holding a license under section 149A.50; or

(iv) the side and rear windows of a limousine as defined in section 168.011, subdivision 35.

Notice the "or" highlighted in red with the arrow pointing at it?? Such a small word yet so important. Trucks and vans are EXEMPT! PERIOD! Has nothing to do with whether they came from the factory with tinted windows. Cars yes. Trucks and vans NO.

Well I stand corrected. Thank you for the information. I read the law as;

So a truck can only have the rear window, and a van can have rear and sides, as well as a herse or police vehicles.

Trucks then with the side windows tinted from the factory are legal, but not if they are tinted after leaving the factory.

Well I would take it to mean rear door windows on a truck as well since it says "rear windows" and not "rear window". Definitely a gray area. Where is a SUV classified? As a truck or van? Confusing indeed.

I remember when I first got my Galant VR-4, I used to get pulled over atleast 2-3 times a week because the guy I bought it from had a big no-no next to his name and the police thought I was that guy! That is until the people at the DMV stopped being lazy and actually got all my paperwork through the system, now I haven't been pulled over ever since.

I think its the fact that the Galant looks like a regular old persons car but boy are they wrong!
