Pay Attention To Detail!

Well, ive had this weird noise on my rebuilt 6 Bolt Engine Since The Day I Bought It. I never thought anything big of it. A Few people thought it was the timing belt braking in. On Start Up the car sounded like it was supercharged literally a very audible whining noise. Nothing bad though no screeching or anything for that matter. Well my car started leaking a little bit of oil. A senior member suggested a new front main seal perhaps. So we took it all apart. First time ive seen the front of my engine without the timing cover on etc. Inspecting everything nicely. Go To Turn The Oil Pump Its Not Turn-able By Hand. Put The Gear on Tried Turning it By Hand It still was hard to Turn. We spend the few extra minutes it takes to take it apart completely and this is what we discovered.












A Very sad moment.


The Vital Lesson is If It Doesn't Feel Right Or Sound Right Something is wrong. A few potential things that could of caused this. Not using the right Balance shaft elimination stubby shaft. The Dealer actually sells them for very cheap and nicely designed shafts with oil holes. My stubby shaft did not have any oil holes in the first place. Probably some aftermarket design. I want to say my bearings are still ok, there werent to many metal shraps in the oil itself. However in the oil pump itself though that's a different story. Ill be doing frequent oil changes probably 3 every 500 miles again. just to make sure i get them all out. Bearing side play was very nice though nothing out of the ordinary. Im really glad we took it apart instead of putting it back together without checking first. Very Very Important as well. When going to reassemble your bottom end putting a small amount of RTV on the oil pan gasket surface will do. I found big chunks of RTV on my oil pick up tube screen. Not excited about that neither. So Either Exercise self control or just simply use the Oil Pan Gasket That Mitsubishi payed engineers to design because IT WORKS!!!!!

Hopefully this will help someone some day.

Buy a oem mitsuishi oil pump and gears and never have this problem again. I've been there and done that with shitty aftermarket oil pump's. Resulting in the same as pictured above. I bought a oem pump and gear's 3 years ago and never had a problem again.

Yeah thanks santa. That is the plan. We Got The Shaft From Brookdale Mitsu. Luckily CarPsycho was nice enough to let me use his cover off one of his engines. I just need to find a replacement one that is usable. I couldn't believe why would someone want to use the after market one when mitsu sells the right one for so cheap. Maybe essence of time? or just build to sell?

If you didn't already know, Mitsubishi uses an RTV called MitsuBond from the factory. The oil pan gaskets are an aftermarket creation. 4G63's came with RTV'ed oil pans from the factory.

I went through the same shit but mine seized up. Your lucky you caught it! Some people that don't use RTV very often tend to use too much. I used to use waay too much when I first started using it. A little bit goes along way.

Ive used a topline front case/oilpump it was installed in 07 and still doing good. I do still use balance shafts with greddy belts. Cant remember what a mitsu front case costs but it was a lot more then the topline when i was shoppping for them

Ok, even if you use a lot of RTV on your oil pan, you will not have issues unless you are an idiot. Let the fucking RTV cure. THEN put oil in the car...

Sweet, But still a little to much can cause bad things to happen. So people just need to be careful. I picked quite a few chunks of the screen so yeah. chimm looks like the pump was pretty new, sucks i have to replace it stuff happens though. Good thing we found out before anything else happened. You should of seen how tight the belt was it started shredding kind of interesting.

RTV is pretty good just if not used right can be detrimental thats all i was saying. If you have it on your pick up screen i figure a little to much was used. No worry's no point in crying over spilled milk at this point . . .

Sorry about yours bro! But seriously man i was like cmon psycho it should be fine if we salvage it. He says sure fix it now or fix it later if we wait you WILL CRY! Im like fine fine lets do it. It should be back and running on monday. God Im Happy We Fixed it right there and then!

Yeh you dont wanna know how much the front plate cost. I almost passed out again $428 from the dealer.

Why would you ever use RTV when a gasket is available? Unless your cheap/lazy. We weren't talking rtv leaking, even though his oil pan looked like it was leaking. It was the fact that rtv going through the oil pump may not be the best idea. The lil holes for the oiling of the pump could be clogged. There was rtv chunks on the pickup tube screen, so it did eat some RTV at some point. I do not know if the oil pump plate was aftermarket or not, but the stub shaft definatly was and did not have the oiling grove in it which is an epic fail in my book cause there is 2 holes in that bearing which means that oil is supposed to flow somewhere, which it isn't going to with out a oil grove on the shaft. just my $.10

Are you referring to the oil pan gasket?

I think sealing surfaces in general. If a gasket can be used RTV should be avoided. If the manufacturer calls for RTV by all means. But even then extreme caution should be taken. So you dont end up like me. Having to worry about how long your bearings are going to last or how much has cycled though the engine.

Quick Update: Its all been put back together properly no oil leaks nothing. The car is significantly quieter that whine was pretty audible i noticed now that it is gone. Oil pressure builds a lot faster and stays relatively consistent.

See now this is what i dont get. . . So what if the factory uses RTV from the factory what does that have to do with RTV being on the pick up screen, or my oil pump rubbing its way to death or anything for that matter. . . ? All i ever said was dont OVER USE IT! I dont need a million people telling me factory uses RTV when chimm already posted a nice section about using RTV.
