I have lots of experience with the 1.6L 2.0L and 2.2L toyota engines.

Assuming that these engines are the same

Do the basics:

compression : compression tester, 5 minutes, requires friend to turn the key.
spark : screwdriver, 1 minute, requires friend to turn the key.
fuel : take spark plug out, turn car over, place cloth/paper towel near sparkplug hole, sniff once you have turned it over several times, should be soaked with fuel.

with all 3 you have a working car, so please test and get back to us.
