Re: The 2008 "Christmas is about giving" thread

I'm really glad to hear that some of you donated to charities.

I donated $50 dollars worth of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo to a local battered women and children's shelter. $50 bucks may not seem like a lot, but it sure bought a ton of stuff at Target.

I also called a few homeless shelters and have scheduled some time in the next few weeks to prepare dinner for people.

This is the first year I've done this, and I don't know how to describe it... It just feels good. It honestly makes me feel good and its better than giving any present to anyone.

I totally agree with you Pete, it does feel really nice to do stuff like that. I volunteered at a foodshelf earlier this year and painted a house with thye Paint-A-Thon program over the summer.

Agreed. At work we donate a lot of time and money to United Way, a local "soup kitchen" and send packages a couple times a year to the Adopt A Soldier program.

I hate to bring this up, because I just think many won't go for it and make up excuses not to come.. But maybe we could have a 'Style volunteer day? All of us could make the time - help those in actual need. Like I said, its a great feeling to help people.

Very cool. I'm happy to hear that you do this. We all have so much to be thankful for, but yet many people take it for granted. A roof over our head, a simple meal, and time to burn on our cars... So many people would love to be in our situation.

If anyone is up for it, I'd really like to put together some volunteer work. Worrying about a car that hasn't (yet) put down 400 whp is a completely bullshit problem - you know what I mean. Let's do something for people that are worrying about where to sleep tonight.

Awesome. It sucks that some companies will choose to cut back with this type of stuff per economic cuts, we can feel good about those who keep it going.

My work works with http://www.crisisnursery.org/index.htm a lot. Something as simple as a $5 for Jeans Day raised a bit over $500 in 3 days and that was matched by the company and then sent off. So some people who would normally not donate, got a little work relaxation and the company got more donations. Went over really well with everyone. They do all sort of this during the year. Lots of walk-a-thons and such, which would also be a good group event.
