I would use a dial indicator on a magnetic base, but that procedure will work pretty well. It will give you a ball park anyway. .006" is good. I think factory is .009" for the top of the spec, if you are at .015" it is starting to go. I had one come it at over .060" and it still ran, but was on its last leg. It was having shifting issues.
