Firefox is Mozilla... What's the point of creating a website that can't be used with browsers other than IE? :razz2:

The point is what I have been told by two people (our IT guy at work and a good friend of mine) that IE has security loopholes which Firefox eliminates. Firefox is becoming a browser which is drasitcally increasing its popularity because of its simplicity, security, and pop-up blocking feature. Although, I am guessing that IE will start to regain popularity once again since SP2 has been released which among other things, addressed the pop-up issue and and compatibility issues with software programs based upon Microsoft Data Access.

....holy shit this thread has gotten off topic :bounce:

There is no comparison between Mozilla and Firefox vs IE. IE Blows Goats (not steve). Seriously, try it and you will never go back. As mentioned, IE is full of security holes, has no ability to get rid of it's vulnerabilities and pretty much just overall sucks. It is only popular because the majority of you internet cattle out there end up with it on your machines and you lack any motivation to search for something better. You can continue listening to MS say they are the best and follow the other choads using this crap, or you can step up to better browsers, there are plenty. If you tried them you might realize what we are talking about.

Oh yea, designing a website to run soley on microsoft ASP's is just plain stupid. His business should do well. :goodluck:

BTW, we can continue this stupid assed debate in a new thread if you like, but this one does need to get backon topic.

You know mine and Matts background in computers. Take the advice or remain one of the cattle, I don't care. Not claiming to be LEET or whatever immature haxor thing you are referring to, but I do have more than enough experience to back up my advice.

It doesn't matter. With Mozilla I don't have to fend off all the pop ups asking me which is better, coke or pepsi, how to make my penis bigger, telling me I just won $5,000,000,000,000, telling me that my clock may be off so I should download a clock program, asking who I will vote for, and the best one of all, a pop up telling me my computer may be infected with spyware and I should download a pop up blocker.

I don't know much about computers, but with Moxilla, there are no pop ups, and it;s faster.

After reading about firefox in another thread I dl'ed it, and have been using both IE and firefox for months.I haven't noticed much difference between the two, I get zero popups with either, they are both similar in speed(firefox is slightly slower on my comp), they only real difference I have noticed are the compatibility issues I run into with firefox.

WTF is that supposed to mean? About 10 years ago when the internet was growing at amazing speed and dialup wasn't even in everyone's home there were mainly two browsers available: IE and Netscape. Netscape is entirely based off of Mozilla. There were also a slew of others that were more or less related to Mozilla. Ever since then there have been websites that have not been coded properly which Mozilla-based browsers have not been able to display properly, and sometimes not able to read at all. Why is it the user's fault that their browser can't understand someone's crappy website?

Obviously the code used today is understood the same by both IE and Mozilla, as the code itself and the browsers have evolved. (Yes, HTML standards change, currently at 4.01 as published by W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium.) But websites are still made in ways that Mozilla browsers can't display them properly. ASP sites are an example, but http://www.asp.net is coded entirely in ASP and it displays just fine in Firefox, where as your friend's site http://www.evilboost.com does not.

Just some proof that it's not the browser that makes or breaks your internet experience, it's the people building the sites that you visit that cause the experience to suck or be enjoyable.

Ok I've been using Mozilla for the last day or so just to see what all the hype is about, and to be honest I really don't see how it is any better. It does have some nice things like a Google search built into the tool bar and the pop-up blocking, but it does load web pages and stream videos a bit slower than IE. I'll continue using it for a few days and see what happens.

A couple things to note. Competition in industry is good. If MS was allowed to go unopposed in every facet of computers, nothing would ever improve other than the companies bottom line. With Linux and Mac and the other less known OS's and compatible software out there, Microsoft has been forced to improve on their software. It also requires people that are not cattle and blindly follow the biggest player hoping they are guided in the right direction. People that support the other options are helping everyone even if that is not their goal. Now as far as Firefox goes, it is the smaller of the two, Mozilla has more features and is a little better overall IMO. Either of them are good, and if you give them more than a day, you will continue finding things that elevate them above Microsofts browser.

One of the biggest things I can tell you is in the world of virus and security issues, MS products are always going to be the biggest target for the authors. They have always been known to be user friendly first and security and performance second and for that, you could end up paying dearly. DCOM support is just one example, it is pretty much not required nowdays, extremely vulnerable and still left in Microsoft software for the few people that might try using it. The Melissa virus as well as a number of other worms and viruses exploited this service and yet it still remains in the system. You have to actively hunt down 2 patches and edit your registry to disable it. Would it not be smarter for Microsoft to offer it as a separate package and only the people who need it could install it? Of course, but then their system wouldn't be as "shrug and pray" (plug and play) as they advertise. IMO they trying to be all things to everyone at a cost of being much less reliable and much more insecure.

Now that I mentioned it, how many of you windows users (XP as well) are going to go without looking up info on the DCOM issue and how to fix it. How many of you would have never known there was an issue with it? It is just one example of many security issues. But people won't inform themselves, will just keep closing their popup windows and using their IE and allowing tons of people on the net access to their computer without their knowledge. Typical cattle. Quit following the masses blindly, try things that are potentially better and raise the bar for all the competitors.
