75W-90 gear oil is about as thick as a 10W-40 motor oil, but the additive package is different.

Don't feel dumb, looking at the numbers most people would assume the same thing!
A lot of cars say its ok to substitute 5W-30, 10W-30, or 10W-40 (depending on the car) engine oil if gear oil is not available. Like anything else though, you're of course best off buying a product made specially for the application i.e. transmission.

Re: LOL - 5 quarts of 75w90 please
And i thought i was dumb when i was 17 i had a ford probe and i didnt check the oil... at all. then there was a leak in the coolent so i filled it up with water.... in um. the dead of winter -15 to -20 degrees out....
Quarter size hole in the side of the block. no more anal probe.

Re: LOL - 5 quarts of 75w90 please
Post #60 says that the gear lube went in the tranny, and royal purple motor oil went in the engine.
He gave his car to a mechanic, and the mechanic did everything correctly.
The fact that he went (raced) over a year without an oil change probably killed the engine.
Gotta love the support of the forums, flaming the guy to death, even though he doesnt know anything about cars, he had the common sense to bring the car to someone who did.
