AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
I want to clean up the engine bay of wires and sensors. Im running AEM EMS with GM MAP sensor and GM IAT sensor. What sensors/soliniods can I get rid of with AEM EMS? Im pretty sure I can get rid of the EGR and emission soliniods. What else can I get rid of?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
Anything you want.
I would recommend to keep coolant temp, knock, cas/cam, IAT,MAP.
Everything else can be ditched, unless your particular vehicle uses the thermostat housing to control the fans via a thermocoupler. Then you might have to do some trigger wiring, but you can delete those as well if you do the wiring.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
Well thats cool, Then there isnt much wire in the engine bay. Im trying to make the underhood look really nice and I think that deleting the bulk wiring will help out alot.
PS: this is post #1000 for me

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
So here is what I think Im keeping...
Brake fluid level
Crank sensor
Cam sensor
Coolant temp
Coolant light
IAC
Oil press
Oil light
MAP
IAT
I just read that the AEM doesnt really look at O2s. So Im going to eliminate the front one and the back one is being swaped out for a AEM wideband controler. Does that sound good? Any sensors you see here that I would need or some that could be eliminated?
Thanks!

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
You will want to keep TPS and knock. Idle control is extremely nice too. Also save the stock boost solenoid wiring for hooking a GM boost solenoid to.

Dont you want the wideband up closer to the turbo?

In terms of sensor performance, does it matter where the wideband is placed in the exhaust travel path?

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
according to the AEM install it says to have it "18" away but if you are planing to be running a turbocharger running at high RPMs for a extended period of time or running leaded gas it should be at least 36" downstream"
Yah I forgot about the TPS and Knock, I planed on leaving them. and I have the GM BCS on there wired up alread.
Im thinking about moving up to the AEM sensors, IAT, 5Bar, BCS.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
I run mine in the stockish position and it's fine. It is recommended to run it farther downstream because they're not as robust as a regular 02 sensor.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
Now from you profesionals...
Right now I have the GM sensors(MAP, IAT, BCS)
Would I benifit in any way by switching to the AEM sensors? I kinda wanna go with the AEM MAP sensors because of the way its set up(threaded in)

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
AEM vs GM should be the same, pending what the sensor can read, 3bar vs 5bar etc.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
Like you stated, the MAP sensor is in a different/more convenient format (IMO), but essentially they're going to read the same. I'm not too keen on putting GM parts on anything, but that's just me. I preffer having a trusted aftermarket name over parts that come in stock cars for items like these. Once again, only my opinion though

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
The AEM MAP sensors are laboratory grade, while the GM MAP sensors are, um, 80s GM grade. But they still work fine. Only being able to read up to 29psi with a GM 3 bar isn't the most realistic setup for a DSM though.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
We just use AEM map ither 3.5 bar or 5bar and the AEM IAT sensors, never had a problem. 80's GM grade, lol.

What about the IAT? GM or AEM?

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
I haven't heard any complaints about the GM IAT. Mine works great as well.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
Does anyone know who makes the AEM and GM sensors? It'd be interesting to know the resolution of each.

Re: AEM EMS What Sensors Needed/Not Needed
The AEM MAP sensors were made by Kavlico, I don't know if they still are.
