Hopefully This time around the used turbo won't be a pile of junk...

I really hope it works for you man, but man just seems like another risky deal to me. Why not just cut your losses, and pick up a new turbo, something that's known and proven to work, from a reputable vendor, and be DONE with it!

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Oddly enough, it's been the used turbos that have worked for me. the only new one i've ever owned, I had issues with.

Many will poke at the fact it's a used turbo, but I took it apart, and have looked over it. I personally am building it too, not some po-dunk fucktards in FL talking shit over the phone and calling me "bro" in their mexi-accents. I cannot afford a brand new turbo. I also wanted to not really modify AGAIN the rest of my setup to work with another new turbo. This will bolt right in place, and the price gave me the oppertunity to get the car running again, with hopes of traveling to the strip before year's end. If they work for over 300k on a semi, why not for me?

I just worry about that 270* thrust bearing...

Do you have much experience building turbos?

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I've taken apart and built old ones I had. It's not difficult. Chad, who works at a diesel shop also went over things with me, and I got all the torque specs for it.

I've spoken to diesel components, FP, garrett and pte, they all say turbos of this size come factory with that 270 thrust bearing. It worried me too, trust me. And, odds are I will be ordering an upgrade kit for it over winter, or sending the turbo into PTE to get their billet upgrade, but we will see. I DO like the fact that it's SS and NOT brass/bronze..whatever it is. Either way, we shall see I guess. Just another part.

I dont see how that matters as everything is riding on a hydrodynamic oil wedge, not the actual bearing.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Interesting fact I just found out. Borg Warner / Airwerks turbos typically come with 270 thrust bearings. I'm guessing my S362 has a 270, and so far so good...

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Joe is right. It does ride on oil, but after discussing things with Chad, This theory was formed:

the comp wheel was a BAD pairing for the turbine wheel. Imagine trying to play tug-o-war..with a 2 year old..they are the turbine wheel, and you are the comp wheel. Anytime i'd hit boost, the comp wheel would "suck" itself towards the comp cover, forcing the oil out of the thrust bearing area, and the thrust collar would then ride/wear against the soft brass metal the 270 bearing was made out of. When letting off the throttle, the shaft assembly would "shutter" back n forth, causing more wear. I have the old thust bearing/collar that shows a bit this to be true. So, I think the new setup will hold together just fine. Hopefully, no other issues with anything else on the car.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

Joe is correct, it really shouldnt matter what it is made out of as if it is making contact, its done for eventually. The oiling system of the 270 isnt allowing enough oil in the contact area and the thrust of the compressor wheel is splashing it out.

As far as differant turbos having 270s having no problems is probably the fact that they dont use garrett center sections that have a weak oiling system on there thrust plates.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

.98 housing is ordered. And, I went to target to get a fire extinguisher for the car too. After an old friend's teggy burnt to the ground in delano, to John's fire scare, to Aaron's old scare, I realized..I don't wanna be caught out, and not prepared. It might be rice, but I'd rather be safe, then sorry, and watch such an investment burn to the ground. Target sells Auto specific extinguishers for around $15 bucks, and I suggest anyone get's one. I dont ever plan on using it, but JUST IN CASE..I'll be prepared. Now, I just need to find were to mount it.

Oh, I also got some r134a in a can for the winter beater, since the windows don't work, and I have no A/C in it..hotboxing this summer has sucked, and I couldn't take it anymore.

Frankly, I don't know why cars don't come with a small fire extinguisher from the factory. Who knows how many roadside carbeques could have been extinguished before the car was fully engulfed by a little extinguisher. It's not rice, it's called safety.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I agree. I saw first hand the aftermath of some kid's teggy, when I first got the talon, and was putting it together at his shop. Now, after all the other frequent small fires, I said $15 dollar insurance policy is nothing when it comes to the investment.

I'm trying to decide were to mount it. Either in front of the driver's seat, or passenger seat, out of the way of the legs. I dunno were else to really mount it..not many locations I could.

You could always do something on the lower side of the cage too. Seems like a decent out of the way yet accessible option. (via back seat area)

I vote for the dash board as a mounting spot

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

IMO, you ideally want it within reach of a window, or even the driver seat. Just solidly mount it somewhere where your body can't hit it in case of a wreck. In our Chump car we welded the bracket to the cage by where the glove box would be.

I thought of that too, but can't because the MSD is mounted there.

Re: Swifty's never-ending project thread!

I just did a quick google search and it looked like quite a few people were mounting them kind of under/in front of the passenger seat like this:

If you think about it, yo would be able to reach it from the driver's seat, or from outside the car that way.
