That would work, or you could just shift it into neutral, and let it sit dead center for a second so you know absolutely where it is, then move it to the appropriate gear.

After a while you get a feel for it and just know where the stick is and what gear its in, and you get to know what RPM's go with what speed in the gears.

I think it is mainly just something that you will be able to feel naturally without doing anything over time.

If someone who knows ho wto drive one can correct me if I'm wrong that would be great.
I do that sometimes (a lot).
