Yup, sounds like your master cylinder needs adjusting. Check the VFAQ, there should be instructions with pictures. Its pretty easy though, all you'll need is 10 or 12mm open-end wrench (I think its a 10, but I'm not positive). A set of pliars or vise-grips would also come in handy....and a flashlight.
