Tranny noise?

I've been hearing a few noises coming from my tranny. One of them, I can hear really well if I'm parked and let off the clutch while in neutral. I hear a flapping noise in a ticking rhythem. The other is a rattle/ticking noise and that happends when I'm driving. I think my tranny will go out soon...probably after a few more launches.

Maybe a throw-out bearing.

Metal pieces can only handle so much stress as they fatigue over time, don't be surprised when things break or wear quickly after repeated launches.

I'm thinking about rebuilding the tranny? Anyone know how much it would cost do to one? I need to start saving money if I plan on driving the talon any longer. This'll be my first time, so I dont know how well its going to turn out...plus I have barely any tools....cant even get my front bumper off with the tools I have...lol.

Sounds like a great idea for you to rebuilt the tranny yourself. Hammer and screwdriver is all you'll need. I don't see having the proper wrenches and tools being any more beneficial to you.

Hammer and screwdriver? Is that all you need? I thought you would've needed way more...like sockets, wrenches and all those other good tools. I'll wait for Spring to come around, then I'll "TRY/ATTEMPT" to do a tranny rebuild and see how well that works out. What kinda parts should I start looking for? Synchros (mine are pretty bad also), gears thingers...and all that other nessessary stuff. I should probably try to get a flywheel while I'm at it, huh?

You need to stay away from the hood release of your car. That is my advice.

Are you serious? He was kidding about the hammers and screwdriver... wow.

Have a reputable shop rebuild it. Have it either profesionally built by a dsm shop or have Rick Shindley do it, he charges good prices.

Oh and if you want to save money do NOT take it to the dealer.

Trying to rebuild the tranny with limited knowledge and tools, will be more expensive in the long run. Dish out the money and do it right, Have someone else rebuild it.
Do you know how to measure the case for the proper spacers sizes? What experience do you have in rebuilding?

Even rebuilding it yourself isn't cheap. I always do my own work, just buy the parts, and compared to what some charge to do it for you, its not worth it to even attempt it yourself, unless you really know what your doing.

lol, chris your an asshole.
How old is the clutch? Does the noice change with clutch pedal position? Most 'noises' that are heard while the vehicle is stationary are either a throw out bearing or an input shaft bearing. If its a t-o bearing, easy fix, just drop the tranny and put one in, if its the input shaft bearing, better find someone to rebuild it.
Im not even sure who rebuilds trannies anymore in the twin cities besides shindley...

My clutch is like 8 months old. If I drive for a little while and park I can hear noise, but only when the clutch is disengaged. If I press the pedal in, the noise goes away until I let it go. When I'm driving on the highway I can hear some other noises when I let off the gas while still in gear. I've had this whining noise, but thats probably from the drive shaft (???). Also when I let off the clutch slowly in like 3rd gear I can hear something spinning against metal. It starts to rub when the clutch is near engagement....if you understand what I'm saying. I'm not the best at describing things as you can see. This Rick Shindley guy...how much does he charge? I've heard of him, but I've never met the guy. How long does it normally take to rebuild the tranny? I dont know what parts need to be replaced either. I'm planning on getting it done before summer starts. I'm still thinking about doing it myself...since I'll probably end up rebuilding the tranny a few more times after this. We'll see what happens...I'll look around the net and see how hard it is.

I am pretty sure its the throw out bearing. If Nash read this he can probably tell you for sure, his car does the same thing that you are describing sometimes.
