Re: Arizona Immigration Law
OK, here's my take on it:
There's not a job an American wouldn't do if it paid fairly for the work. I am way far right of Liberal, way far right. BUT, I do have the same belief as Ted Kennedy that no man should work 40 hrs a week and still live below the poverty line. And that's what's expected with the illegals.
Let's use the "Picking Lettuce" analogy that people love to toss into the discussion. Typical thought goes like this. "If we didn't have those people here picking lettuce for $4 per hour, we would not be able to afford to buy lettuce and those farmers would go out of business. So lets break it down. How many heads of lettuce could one worker pick an hour? Let's be conservative and say 1 per minute. I'm sure they can harvest heads of lettuce much faster than that with sharp blades, but I'll go with 1 per minute. That's 60 heads of lettuce per hour. At $4 an hour that equates to $.066666667 or 7 cents per head of lettuce. Current minimum wage is $7.25 but I'll round up to $8 per hour. So now by using American workers your cost on a head of lettuce just went up 7 cents per head. If they pick 2 heads of lettuce per minute, your cost only went up 4 cents per head of lettuce. If they pick 4 heads of lettuce in a minute, your cost just went up 2 cents per head of lettuce. So where's the problem?
The real reason they are here is to bring the American worker down to that level of income. Look at whats going on. The middle class is going away because big business keeps getting bigger while the income of the American worker keeps getting lower.
Last time I checked, we didn't have millions of Canadians crossing the border illegally.
Tom, you really need to read the law. It has more requirements against profiling than the Federal law. Nobody is going to get tapped on the shoulder and asked for their "papers". If a law enforcement officer is already in a lawful contact with a person, and that person cannot produce proper identification like a driver's license, social security card, etc and that person raises suspicion that they might not be in America legally, that officer has the right to detain them under the grounds that they might be here illegally. This racial profiling crap is out of hand. Mexicans are crossing illegally into the country, so the law of probability is that Mexicans will be here illegally without proper identification that makes them legal. If someone murders somebody and there is a witness, race is always given in a description of the suspect. So if it's reported a white male was a suspect, does that make it racial profiling if a suspicious white man was found in the area?
