Fender rolling.
Anyone know of good local places that have some experiacne with fender rolling? Right now I'm looking into my options for a wheel/tire combo to run during the summer months. Stock is 215/45/18. I'm running 225/40/18 right now with no issues (winter tires), but for the spring/summer/fall wheels I was looking at going with an 18 x 8 (maybe 7.5) wheel and running 235/40/18 for a tire size. Some other owners have sworn it will not rub with the factory suspension, but with a 1.5" to 2" drop it will rub.
The Mazda 6 club site has a great write up on fender rolling, but when it comes down to it I want someone who I can hold account able and not owrry about possible paint damage from a beginner like myself giving it a try (even with the proper materials).

I am going to look into it, I did a bit of research, and I think it was mnscc.net that had a thread about a shop that would do it.
I'll see what I can find.

I guess hypertek Area 51 does it, never heard of the shop, not backing them up or anything, it was the only shop I saw ever listed as doing fender rolling.
I guess you could call body shops as well, someone might do it.

I didn't even think Area 51 was still open, not that I would go there. I'm gonna call around to a few other leads and I'll fill in any info I can.
It might even allow me to look at 245/40/18s if I can get it done right.

Are you going to be autoxing the car or what is the main purpose for going with a little wider tire? I guess I see no point unless your making too much power and the tires cant hook, or you are pushing the car extremely hard around the track...
It would be cheaper to get a really sticky set of tires in 215 versus rolling fenders and getting a 235 that isnt as good.

I want a wider tire on the car and don't want to worry about it rubbing. Not only for daily driving and overall handling, but also for auto x and maybe a road course or three. The way the cars are set up, people on the west coat have had much better luck with a 1.5 inch drop and some 235s over the stock setup.

How wide is the stock wheel? I dont think 7.5 is enough for a 235 series tire on a "handling" setup. And like Peter said, I dont think handling will suffer much with 215's. If anything I would probably run 205's in the snow and 225's or stock size in the summer.

The stock wheel is 18 x 7. 18 x 8 seems to be the wheel for a 235 series tire. I'm already sitting with 225s for snow tires, since size is limited in 18s. So is quanity as well, and 225 is currently the only option for winter tires in my size.
Anyway, I'm pretty set on 235. I'm getting new tires, so why not give myself a chance to get a better overall tire with a bit more of a contact patch.
So for now, I'm just looking for fender rolling options. Someone who can do the job correctly without fucking up the paint.

My car comes stock with 17X7.5 and a 235/40/17 tires.
Just not sure why youd upgrade... I doubt you will notice a difference. Getting better tires is where you will see a difference in handling.
But its cool, if you want to do it, I just doubt rolling the fenders will be cheap.

235s even after a drop seems like the limit. Are you looking to lower it too? If not then the 235s would clear no problem, like you said.
If you are looking to lower it and run 3/4" wider tire then I wouldnt doubt it one bit that you would need a little fender rolling. If so, start a thread on MNSC, there are more than one person that has a fender roller. Not just a baseball bat(which works) and I am sure they would be willing to borrow it out for a small fee. Remember, slammed Hondas have a hard time running more than a 215, so fender rollers are definitely out there, especially on MNSC.

Peter, I want to upgrade to a wider tire to increase the contact patch of the tires with the ground on a consistant basis. While getting a nice sticky tire is probably the best thing to do for a track tire, I'd probaly tear it up really fast if I was to daily drive with them.
And yes Tim, I'm also going to want to be abel to drop the car. Propbably an inch to 1.5 inches.
Right now, this is what I am looking into. But I will only do it if I can get it done by someone who won't just go "oops" if they fuck something up.

I have 235's on a 8" wheel and handling wise they are great, basically no sidewall flex.
One thing to watch on rolling the fender is that you are probably going to crack the paint when it gets rolled, which will lead to premature rust. Moving the metal that far will probably crack it on the inside.

This is why I've been looking for a shop to do it. If done right, the paint will be just fine. Proper use fo a heat gun, the right tool, and the right experiance makes it an easy process for those who know what they are doing.

One other thing that popped into my head, is that the negative camber you could gain from a drop might give you enough clearance.
On my civic, before I got a camber kit, my tires wouldn't rub, and then as soon as I got the camber back to -.5* they started rubbing.
