Looking at the other side of things, what if the earth is able to "cleanse" itself much more than most people realize? Weather patterns seem to go in a 70 year cycle.

I'm glad we are talking about this, I just saw a show on the Discovery Science channel about this a few minutes ago. It was called "The Big Chill". Look for it, it explains alot. They stated directly that Iceland's (or Greenland's, can't remember which) glaciers are melting and receeding at a rate of 12 kilometers a year. Maybe a decade ago they were receeding at 6 kilometers a year, so the rate has doubled in recent times. In the next 50 years the waters that dump into the Atlantic Ocean from several rivers will double due to global warning, which will dilute the salt water and slow or stop the "conveyer".
