How loud can lifter knock get?

1991 Eagle Talon TSi
5spd
3" exhaust
Removed the MBC

I've searched everything I could search and have found nothing to help me. I can't decide if I have really bad lifter knock or something in the head is fucked up. When I start the car in the morning I hear a loud clicking noise for a split second and the the RPMs drop down to normal and the noise is gone. I can't hear any ticking noise or any other unusual noise at all when the car is idling. However, no matter what gear I'm in, if I'm just crusing in that gear, I hear a constant clicking noise from about 2500RPM or so on and it gets louder when I just barely put my foot down to accelerate a little bit. When I floor it though, the car isn't bogged down at all like it would be with a shot rod bearing or anything else. My main question is, how loud can lifter knock get? Any ideas as to what's causing this noise? I'm out of ideas on what's wrong and any input is greatly appreciated.
