Re: Project winter beater

Why not just get rid of all that emissions crap if it's a OBDI?

Emissions crap such as what exactly? The charcoal canister is completely disconnected. Otherwise I kept everything else just to see where I was at to begin with.

If there is an easy way to remove other things then I would definitely do it.

Something else I might add; when I had a shop tech. attempt to read the CEL code he informed me the computer wasn't communicating with the scanner. He suggested it may be a fuse however I have yet to locate a blow one.

Re: Project winter beater

The evap solenoid. I guess you weren't really super clear on what you had taken off and what you had left. What happens if you just run it without that little filter? just a straight line from the intake mani to the map sensor?

True, true. I had not listed anything. I am unsure what would happen without a filter. From what I can draw though is, the filter is there so that soot and such does not get into the sensor. I have considered running a brass fitting then an inline filter for a fish tank or something. Finding a fitting though is next to impossible. No stores carry fittings with metric thread.

I'd just rather not mess with a line with no filter then take a chance. Plus I've got a replacement on the way already. I just pray it is the same thing!

Re: Project winter beater

Couldn't you just run one of these inline? They cost like $1

Otherwise if you do an egr delete (or have done so already) there shouldn't be much if any soot in the intake tract.

I probably could have but figured why not try and see if what I found that looks right, is right. A direct replacement always works without flaw.

I don't have a picture but I redid the setup not two hours ago. I JB Welded a vacuum fitting barb off of a plastic T or Y fitting to where the vacuum line was.

I have a spare intake manifold from the old engine that I have completely degreased and cleaned. I had planned to port match the runners, then do an EGR delete. This most likely will happen this summer sometime. I have also thought about going to a 2g TB. It is all up in the air right now though. lol

Re: Project winter beater

Holy long time no update Batman!

Well okay, there isn't a whole lot to update you all on other than the car has more rust and the engine bay is filthy. I found what Mitsubishi calls a "gas filter" but I didn't find it through Mitsubishi; I had to buy it from Toyota. Go figure. $35 later the car was "fixed". It stopped dumping gas into the engine trying to wash the hone out, lol, and picked up quite a few MPGs. The check engine light remains however. Currently it is sitting at around 28 MPG. That isn't impressing me considering my GS-T got around 26 the last time I checked (two years ago).

So it looks like I'll be going with the plans I wanted to pursue with this from day uno. Stay tuned..

Re: Project winter beater

I picked up a car for the 4g63 swap.

I was going to use the front end to fix the Talon's front end alignment but of course, the previous owner screwed the front end pulling it onto the trailer. Whatever, I got the engine and trans out of the deal.

So far the engine is looking pretty clean. Hopefully by tomorrow night I can have the head off, disassembled and in the hot tank at work.

Stay tuned!

Re: Project winter beater

I've got damn near everything for the engine.

I'm waiting on the welding place to finish up on a valve cover, the HX35 compressor cover and my broken short shifter bolt. Then I'll have bung welded onto the oil pan.

Otherwise I need a bunch of gaskets, a timing belt kit, the Bullseye bolt-on housing, and intercooler, DSMLink and very few other odds and ends. Then this swap can finally happen.

Re: Project winter beater

Picked up an Evo. 3 TB and 2g two piston front calipers Tuesday. I've been slowly tearing the head apart at work and cleaning things up.

I finished painting the block tonight. I cannot tell if it looks good enough or not. The sun tomorrow will help determine if I accomplish what I wanted.

I'm also trying to decide if I should grab some NPR pistons while I'm at the level I am or possibly just re-ring the block/pistons. Decisions, decisions!

I'm just driving it now. After moving to school money fell off in a big way. Then the truck took a dump and I was left to just drive this. The result was a lot more rust than it originally had. I've been tossing the idea around of putting the stock engine from my '95 Talon into this but then I am left to drive my truck.

The truck still needing the front end rebuilt. So I have to find money to do the front end for the truck, then money for various clutch components to make this car a hydro. clutch car, all the while paying for school things. Not to mention I no longer have shop within close driving distance to work on this.

So to directly answer your question no, it was not completed in the way I had originally wanted to complete it. That is not to say it will not change in the future.
