Re: Evo X upgrades
Both Primo and GrimmSpeed were willing to commit to having the parts done by Monday. I'll get a call if they have it sooner. Don't want to slow Shane down too much but this is obviously the time to get this stuff done.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Is your head getting ported too while its off? How about your exhaust manifold?

I'm not porting the head or messing with the valves--just new Cosworth valve springs there. The intake mani is at GrimmSpeed and I'm going to a Full Race tubular on the exhaust side.

Re: Evo X upgrades
OK cool, I'm sure I just missed the part about the exhaust manifold earlier in your thread. I assume you got black coating for the turbine housing? Are you doing a thermal dispersant coating on the intake manifold? Definitely considering a phenolic gasket for the intake manifold. With the gasket + coating my IM it stays cool to the touch even after a hard auto-x run when it used to get burn-your-skin-off hot.

Yup, that is the plan. Boomba sells a gasket and I love their stuff.

Re: Evo X upgrades
WOW, that's quite the build you have going on there!
For me personally, I would have done things in stages over time, instead of doing everything at once and then having to try and deal and sort out all the quirks and problems which can be paramount with dumping $20k+ in all at once.
I just hope you don't end up with a ton of quirks and problems from things either not working like you had planned or if things don't work together as you have planned...this can lead to some serious discouragement and dedication of time and effort on your part and takes ALOT of patience.
It will be interesting to see how it all works and looks when it's all done. I say this with all due respect and in a humorous way...but props to you and others for being the "guinea pig" for others to learn from and for keeping the local shops and guys busy!

There have been a few stages but it's been over just six months of time.
1) Basic bolt-ons (fmic, exhaust, intake, etc) and a 93oct tune
2) E85 tune
3) Everything but the kitchen sink
The kitchen sink on stage 3 came mostly out of practicality. So much has to come off the car to do springs/cam/turbo that I'd be duplicating labor by not doing my whole wish list.

I've bought new parts and anything difficult has been done by RS or DB. I think that limits my risk a fair bit. There are parts of this project that are question marks but the worst that could happen is it costs more to figure something out.
This car isn't primarily for transportation, it's my hobby. That means there are few things I'd rather be doing than being on here or scheming about the next part to buy.

Hopefully I'll soon be down to corner balancing and buying tires!

Re: Evo X upgrades
When I got home there was a call from GrimmSpeed...they don't have any of the gaskets that are required to do the porting. That's a bit of a wtf? for me. They offer porting services on their website but have customers always bring in their own gaskets?
I called Shane and he's going to drop them off for me on his way home. Thanks Shane! He said that he got the valve springs in the head, removed the stock rods/pistons, and was working on the rings on the new pistons today.
I was surprised to receive the Cusco rear strut tower brace so quickly--the front one took four months. The Coto sports BOV also arrived. Neither are much to look at.

Re: Evo X upgrades
A couple years ago GrimmSpeed wanted to get into porting for Evo 8/9s and I had to provide all the gaskets. Kind of odd that it's still that way, though. Make a damn template already.

The guy that rung me up mentioned that Shane would be installing a Green in is VIII soon. It's not like the employees aren't into Evos. Just seems odd.
Another thing is how weird it is to only know people by their forum names and having no idea what they look like. I walk into Primo the other day and Jesse's like "decided to bring it in?" Took me a couple minutes to figure out who he was. lol.

Wait until people know who you are and you don't know who they are. That's always a blast.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Every time I come on here to post a legitimate update I've been banned. WTF? haha.
Picked up my turbo and intake manifold from GrimmSpeed tonight. The intake is a thing of beauty--they look so much better coated.
You can't tell in this photo but the BBX's exhaust outlet has taken on this really nice golden hue...similar to what you'd see with stainless that has gone through a few heat cycles.
Primo needed another day to finish my valve cover. Not a big deal in itself but my work schedule is murder so finding time to make another trip out there is going to suck. Boo-hoo!

Re: Evo X upgrades
I picked up my valve cover at Primo and ran most of the parts out to DB over lunch. Shane was working on the piston rings at the front counter when I came in.
Here's another pic of the motor, sans pistons & rods this time.
