Smile Fran05's 1G AWD DSM on the dyno

Numbers: 293 whp / 282 Tq (23 Psi)
Dyno: Dyno Dynamics
Tuner: Self-tuned
Ambient Temp: 55 degrees
Elevation: 900 ft

Car Info
Year: 1992 Talon
Engine Management: DSMlink v2
Turbo: Evo 3 16g from FP
Intercooler: Ebay w custom short route piping
100% E70 fuel
Stock Head and Cams

After working out few bugs like boost leaks, missfires, coolant fans and others, I was able to get a somewhat decent tune on E70. First pull right off the street was 284 whp, leaning it out a bit and adding a bit of timing resulted in maximum of 298 whp, but it was picking up some knock up top.
The car was rich at around 10.0-10.3, but thats what it liked the most. E70 is still relatively new territory for me, but I made some progress.
Future plans are cams, ARP headbolts, better HG.
Videos soon to come as well!

Awesome man! How about a little more boost in the midrange? That 16g should be able to do 26 w/o too much trouble, should bring your torque up to 300 pretty easy. Still, 22psi and 296whp/280wtq is awesome power, esp on stock cams!

And look, a real powerband! Boost/torque from 3400rpm-7400rpm, that's awesome!

eye heart 16g's.

Sounds like he was taking it easy on the head gasket & bolts. Corn juice can take a lot more boost, for sure.

That's pretty bomb, sounds like a really fun car, I also <3 16gs, I almost want to just make my car a 16g warrior again. I love the useable powerband, just sounds like a hell of a fun time.

very nice numbers for stock cams+e70! I also have the E316g and so far, it's the best street turbo I have had.

That is extremely rich. I would almost say your seeing rich knock. I would try leaning it out a lot for one pull and just see what happens. Damn good numbers for 23psi though!

Nice numbers! 16g's are definitely badass turbos. I love the one I put on my car. Nothing like 20 psi by 3k rpm.

Some pretty nice numbers! But why didn't you let Shane tune it if you already up at DB?

^word. AFRs in the 10s is wicked rich for E85 and boost is low, but understandable if you are worried about stock HG and studs even though stockers are supposed to be quite strong.

Like andy said I would try leaning it out for a pull and see what it likes, maybe 11.5-12.0
Awesome power.

It knocks for real if he leans it out of adds boost/timing.

Re: Fran05's 1G AWD DSM on the dyno

Thanks for all replies.

While at the dyno, I tried turning up the boost one full turn on my MBC and as we started doing the pull, as soon as the car hit 28psi, it started sputtering and missing. I figured my plug gap was too big, so I pulled the plugs and closed the gap, but that hasn't changed anything. On that pull with 28 psi though, power was climbing much stronger, I gained 20whp over my previous pull just at 3500rpm, but then it started to miss.

I ruled out, that missfire was caused by newly wired slimline fan (always on) drawing too much amperage and voltage through it, causing voltage drops and weak spark. As the result - missfire as soon as the car had some decent load and boost. I have disconnected the fan and it runs perfectly now.

I tried leaning the car out, but that yielded no power. Keep it mind, that 10.0 AFR's are on the gas scale and ethanol needs 30% more fuel to maintain stoich afr's. Ideally, I would like to tune e85 with lambda, but I have to learn how to do so first.

My trip to the dyno was aimed primarily to discover how good my tuning capabilities were and how much a car can put down with my setup. I wasn't looking for a tune, since I prefer to tune my car myself.

In terms of driveability, e316g is still a blast. Spools up faster than 14b and has tons of torque that literally sweeps you off your feet and puts you back into the seat hard. Great feeling!

I would like to say thanks to my friends who made this possible. Special thank you goes to Brian (archertsi) aka Byrdseed aka BSM. He has supported me throughout my whole DSM experience and I would never be making a 300whp dyno pulls if it weren't for him. Thanks, Brian!

I feel like a proud father. You have come a long way my son, from not knowing what a boost leak is to being able to tune your own car. Good job mang! More bIgGeR numbers to come Im sure.

BSM FTW! Also thanks to the Archer Shop I'm sure.

Good stuff! Tuning my own car is something I want to try in the future, but my knowledge comes up short of where it needs to be before I do something like that (Reading is my new best friend). Props to you for doing it! Got any pictures of this beast?
