1998 Pontiac Firebird
Whats some good and bad about these babys? Cause we could be looking at this as a replacement to the GSX.
This is just our newest car of intrest, but I know nothing about these things.

So what do we look at in a motor. It does need to be an AT though.

The 3800 is a good engine. If you want to go fast, get an LS1. If you want to sound good, get an LT1. The LS1s put down 300-310 stock with a 6 speed in most cases. Very very easy to get power out of. The only thing really that sucks about those cars is that the 10 bolt with break with the stock power level and sticks. There was a guy at dodd that was on his 3rd ten bolt already. Nothing is better than a turbo ls1, except for maybe a twin turbo ls1, with say 1100 RWHP.
If you want to go fast some what reliably, the LS1 is the way to go.

Get the V8, the AT's in those things are pretty decent. You will have to deal with typical GM quality though...everything is made of cheap plastic and a '98 should have already begun the interior falling apart process.

The interior in my 97 LT1 was actually the best out of ever car I've owned, except for maybe the WRX. The leather seats are very nice. My 97 had no signs of wear at all when I was forced to sell it last September. The 6 speed tranny in the f-bodys (T-56) is a dream. I was able to get it in first at 25 MPH when niteryder and I went at it last summer.

I beleve that Allan mentioned that it will be AT they are interested in. Don't the AT's generally turn better ET's for the non-terriffic driver (no offense to anyone as we are all professional-grade racecar drivers )?

Definitely get the V8. Getting a six in that car is like getting Pam Anderson without the boob job.
Speaking of that, I just picked up a 91 Firebird with a TPI 350 auto. Build quality is for shit, but she'll smoke the hides forever. Videos coming soon.

i would say that the ls1 would be a very good choice and if you still are a tad open minded about your tranny choice.... the t-56 is a great tranny and you'll have tons of fun rowing through the gears.... oh yeah and the ram air or fire hawk look a little better than the formula v8 in my opinion.... just my .02

No 5/6 speed wanted. This would be a fun nice weather daily driver for Jana mostly. A new baby for the summer months. We have the normal daily driver in the 1.8L Eclipse which run pertty dam good. For the winter we would stick to the 1.8L and then maybe keep our eye out for another 1G AWD DSM or a sweet deal on a 2G.
So we want an auto for driving ease and no, it probably will not be modded.

Yet another opportunity to post whore! :bounce:
Allan you would look right at home with a mullet, Jana is a different story. A v8 bird would be fun to mod at the shop, you couldn't really get one and expect me to sit back and leave it alone could you? At least with the 1.8, you don't have to worry about that.

The GSX is just getting old, but she still oves it and if she keeps it it will still be her baby. Slow retarded baby, but her baby none the less. If it was my call we would trade the GSX and the Truck in on a new Titan!
Or I would love to get an early 70s mercury cougar.

If you have to settle for a v6, you could always pick up a supercharger from a series 2 3800 (gtp), and smaller pulley. IMO, get a v8, you will be happier in the long run... Check out the gtp forums, you could find one for a pretty decent deal.
