My Evo IX dyno session
Yesterday I swung up to DB for a tuning session with Shane and got some results that I am very happy with After getting a few issues sorted out last week everything seems to have come together fairly well.
mods:
Buschur Magnaflow turboback exhaust
Buschur intake with Vibrant dry filter
Buschur SS coated o2 housing
Buschur coated/ported exhaust manifold
Hughes/Scheides ported turbine housing
Buschur lower intercooler pipe
Joe P. MBC (set at ~23.5 psi)
Walbro 255 fuel pump
my dyno chart:
Scheides was ready for battle as usual:

Re: My Evo IX dyno session
Woot! Mildly modded IX's put out some pretty retarded power with the right combo of parts and tuning. I was there mainly as a cheerleader/evofanboi, but I did talk shane and hughes into trying out the lean cruise 'mod' I've been toying with over the last few months. Car cruises down the freeway at 15.6:1 with no ill effects.
This also shows that the ported manifold/hotside/ss o2 housing really make good power, shane was saying the average intake/exhaust/mbc/tune'd IX puts down 275-290whp on their DD, this is a solid 20+whp over that.
I am jealous hughes! My VIII put down 'only' 266whp when it was first tuned, maybe might have hit 275whp with a better parts combo. This car is 50whp over that!

Re: My Evo IX dyno session
Then lean-burn thing seems to work very well, the car drive perfectly smooth and I am saving gas I think the biggest improvements were made in the mid-range, it is now much fatter than it was before. I still haven't gotten a chance to really try out the car since the tune though. Traffic was heavy enough coming home yesterday that I didn't want to try too much; plus I just got off with a warning after being pulled over doing 80 in a 30 ("racing" a Lexus SUV).

Re: My Evo IX dyno session
Nice. So to the EVO ignorant. What do you have to port on that stuff? Or is it fairly obvious when it's all apart?
And the "lean cruise "mod" ". Did you just tune that part of the map, or was there an actual "mod" you had in mind?
In any case, that would be a fun car, congrats.
And in a similar question to Joe's.. did you happen to see a blue NSX just chillen?(it's waiting for Shane to tune it).

Re: My Evo IX dyno session
No different than DSM stuff. Ported runners to match head and port outlet into turbine to match gasket. Do the same on the turbine housing and that's about it.
I have pics of the stuff from my car here:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16982
The lean cruise 'mod' is just a tuned part of the map, and then tweaking the crossover point to open-loop mode.
I did not see the nsx or I would have drooled more, I've seen it around elite while wrenching a few audis with ktan and that is a damn nice car. PLEASE post up here results from tuning the thing, and PLEASE come take me for a ride when it warms up!

Yeah it is pretty crazy. When Luke (9guy9) had Shane tune his 2.3l Evo we were a little dissapointed with the power but very impressed with the torque. I dont remember the numbers exactly but it was over 300tq and upper 200s hp with out any porting but standard bolt ons. I cant remember if he had cams or not either but I think he might have.
Either way, those IXs are nuts, make the VIIIs look like sallys mod for mod.

Right now probably just drive it and have a ton of fun! It'll get more mods slowly, but nothing extreme is in the works since I hope this car will be my reliable DD for years to come. I'd like to get a GM boost control solenoid to hold boost better up top and I wouldn't mind doing cams in the near future.
Joe - I did see the red 1G but had no idea it was yours. It looked pretty clean and to be in nice shape (as far as I could tell just looking through the window from the dyno room). What kind of clutch issues are you having?
Mo - I did not see the blue NSX, but if I had I am sure I would have gawked a bit. I was gawking at a hot looking white STI though
As far as the porting is concerned Scheides summed it up pretty well. The exhaust manifold is ported just like a DSM manifold is done, then it is JETHot coated or whatever its called. For the turbine housing we just gasket-matched and smoothed things out a bit down into the housing. Nothing extreme, just enough to smooth the flow. The ceramic coated o2 housings come decent, but we did do some grinding on the welds to smooth things out and opened up the wastegate passage a tiny bit more. We also hacked up the stock o2 housing heat shield to fit over the tubular unit to keep as much heat in the exhaust/out of the engine bay as possible.
