Re: thinking about going to Maaco

I heard most people go to Maaco only when they are about to sell the car. They seem to do crappy work. I guess it depends on the quality of work you want. Can anyone recommend any other shops that do a good job and won't charge an arm and a leg? Because I need to repaint my car too.

Bradon's Maaco job is actually very nice considering what he paid. Maaco does fine work and can actually do some pretty nice paint jobs if you're willing to pay for it.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

I've had my car painted at maaco. I went for the base/clear job. The paint job turned out great but after a while it loses the fine gloss. It's been 2 years since the paint job it still looks pretty good.

They're not bad, but you get what you pay for. They're not as good as the factory paint job by any means.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

Maaco in Burnsville has done alot of work for me and it's all been great. Steve is right however, if you tell them you want it done as cheap as possible they will not spend that much time preping. Also, the owner will give you options on the quality of paint you want to use. Obviously if you use lower quality paint it will be cheaper but will fade/oxidize quicker.

If you prep it and tape it yourself it will save you some serious dough.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

I'll let you be the judge. This is Maaco's $600 paint job. I paid $900 in the end because they fixed a couple dings, and I bought the $100 prep job as well.

Shut up.

And this was done at the Maaco in Osseo, not 2 minutes from LSE. They use Dupont paints, and do all of Toyota City's body work/paint jobs.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

Anyone paint their cars themself? I have all the tools to do it,but im wondering how much all the paint thinner and hardener and all that would cost vs. getting it done at a pro shop, such as macco. And im wondering about a color for my car.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

Have you guys seen people who uses a paint roller and paint their car that way... it's pretty cool. My cousin did it on a couple of cars already. The roller supplies a really thin layer. You have to do couple coats for it to look good.

-The 6 coats consists of

1- coat 1, then after 5 hours or more:
2- coat 2, then after 12 hours (overnight):
-wetsand
3- coat 3, then after 5 hours or more:
4- coat 4, then after 12 hours (overnight):
-wetsand
5- coat 5, then after 5 hours or more:
6- coat 6, then after 12 hours (overnight)"
-wetsand
-buff/polish

They say you wont really see ok paint until the 3rd or 4th paint. The coats are very thin that's why you have to paint many coats. The more coats you paint, the better the shine and look.

Yup, roller with that canadian rustoleum paint called Tremclad or something. I was tempted to find it, but they don't sell tremclad here, so I just went to Maaco. Now I'm all about Maaco!

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

A cheap Maaco job is still going to be far better than a roller job, IMO.

Depends how much time you put into it. Mine is a poor example because I ran out of time to wetsand and buff.

Looks like 94AWD already found what I was talking about. Just look at how those ones in the link turned out. It's nutty!

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

If you liked textured paint go with a roller... I prefer using spray though for a nice smooth finish.

It's all about wetsanding. Even the best spray job in the world will have orange peel until it is wetsanded.

Without any wetsanding, obviously an experienced painter with a spray gun will do the best job, but for the money, there are other ways around it. My friend painted his truck with a compressor and PPG paints and everything, and any flaws were just sanded out, the thing looks better than almost any stock paint, and could be done even better if he spent more time, but he just wanted something that looked pretty good, because the truck gets used, so a show winning paint job doesn't matter.

Re: thinking about going to Maaco

Just dont go with Macco. The guy that i bought my car from got it painted there i believe and the paint is all chipping but you need to look close cuz the previous paint from before just shows up because they didnt prep it at all. Just sprayed right over the old paint. If you know someone with a spray gun and an air compressor go try it yourself. It will look way better. Make sure you sand it down before though.
