[QUOTE=Goat Blower] Higher octane slows down preigntion(detonation), but if you're running... QUOTE]

Just to clarify, preignition and detonation are two very different things. Detonation can be caused by the lower octane gas. But, preignition will not be caused by the lower octane. Preignition is caused by the formation of "hot spots" in the combustion chamber.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

I accept it. I ain't gunna bitch about it because it won't do me any good. I just don't drive all over the place anymore. I drive to work, back, and a couple other places during the week. The extra 40 cents I pay for gas now equates to what, 5 more dollars a week for gas? Whoopty doo, I'll just drink one less long island now to compensate.

Since it sounds like you didn't watch the news today, I'll tell you. Gas hit $6/gal today in Atlanta.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

I think people should bitch about it until the government does something about it. This is just wrong, you can't expect people to adjust this fast without major consequences. There's going to be a cascading effect if this isn't curbed. Just because I can afford gas doesn't mean others can. How long will it be before it's more profitable for some people to just stay home and collect unemployment or welfare? I know between daycare and commuting my girlfriend is barely making enough to pay her bills. She has zero extra spending money. And she has it much better then a lot of people.

I know when I took my job half way across town I didn't factor in the price of comutting to tripple (and more as it looks).

And where's all the oil where taking from Iraq going? After all that's the only reason we're there right? j/k

Re: The EPA just announced.....

The oil companies can pretty much print money at will. There is no true competetion between them, they are an oligopoly. The only competition is to find more and refine it for cheaper. Outside of the turbo DSM world, most people don't have much brand loyalty to specific kinds of gas. So if one oil company decides to raise the price of gas one day, the others don't say "Hey, lets lower ours, so that more people will buy ours.", instead they say "That's great, let's raise ours too, we can make even more money."

Re: The EPA just announced.....

When it comes to my dsm, I don't care about the price as much because I got the car for fun, not just transportation. It doesn't run too often so I am not filling it at all most of the time though.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

even dropping the boost 2-3 psi and running 89 octane could help a bunch, I did that coming back from Iowa, cause 89 is cheaper, and at like 14psi, it was knock free.

Yep, glad to see that you saved a few pennies of your hard earned money. Just run the car as close to N.A. car as you can.

Actually, If you're going for a long trip, why not just take the turbo off and buy a 420a exhaust manifold from a junkyard and bolt it up.. I haven't seen one of these and don't know if the dimensions are right. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like a good way to save $$ on gas.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

My talon got better gas mileage with the turbo on there, 25mpg. Then I took the turbo off and ran a custom pipe from my manifold to downpipe, 20mpg was all I got then. The 420a is not a mitsu motor, different exaust manifold. The best way to save gas is not use boost, most people have a hard time with this. And be really smooth with the gas pedal, and try to drive on highways as much as possible.

Gas per barrel is taking a dip already. Down 19 cents a barrel just from last night.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

Yep, i saw that too. $69x something. Oil is going down but the pump price will still go up to control the demand. It doesn't appear to be a shortage of crude oil, it's the refining into gasoline that's the problem. Airlines won't admit to it but they're starting to worry. One large airport had enough fuel till next week.

Re: The EPA just announced.....

Here in the Chicago area that I am in (Carol Stream/Glendale Heights) gas has been over 3.40 for 87 since the morning the storm hit, and it hasn't fluctuated much.

I guess driving a Neon is a good thing right now, 38mpg on the highway and low 30's in the city if I drive good, and it runs fine on 87 octane!

The turbo improves the efficiency of combustion. If you don't ram on the gas pedal too hard, you'll get better mileage with the turbo on that without a turbo.
