Thumbs up Shift from AWD to FWD.

Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Galants were available with a switchable tranny/transfer case combo, allowing you to switch to FWD simply by removing a bolt and bracket from the tranny and transfer case. Removing the bolt from the tranny allows the plunger in the case to extend, locking the center diff down. Removing the bolt from the transfer case allows the plunger to retract, unlocking the shaft, allowing the transfer case to freewheel. I need to find one of them!!

You can find one on eBay every once in a while, but I don't know of anybody using it.

I'm not sure if its weaker, I would have to look inside of one. but I would be putting ont in a stock talon AWD for hopes of better MPG.

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

new to me, now wouldnt it be nice if you could do that inside the car or while moving, you could get the AWD launch and then switch it off once your moving so you dont get all the parasitic loses in hp.
I dont know, if i stated thaqt as accuratly as possible, but im sure some one understands what im saying

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

John has one that he will be putting into his talon. After he gets mike to weld a vc, all he has to do is drop a bolt to dyno from awd to fwd.

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

The output shaft going to the driveshaft on the switchable JDM transfer cases have been known to snap.

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

So is it just a transfer case that is different or is the "bolt" in the transmission? What parts would you need to swap out to make it work with a 1G.

Does it match up to the splines on our trannys here? I have no idea how it works... as Ive never heard of this before.

I assume its weak basically like having a 3bolt versus a 4bolt rear end?

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

They are exactly the same as far as bolting them in but can be switched. I was told that mine was modified to be switchable, it was not a JDM part. I am not sure though. I got it from Joem. What is a ton of HP or enough to break the imput shaft?

Re: Shift from AWD to FWD.

That transfer case actually is the JDM one. It came as a switchable, it was not modified.

Oh, I thought he said he looked up the parts and converted it or something. I must have heard him wrong then.
