Im just wondering if anyone has a true manual rack in there 1G and maybe would let me see how bad it is...

My PS leaks and I dont want to buy stupid seals for it so I may just get a 1.8 manual rack.

Try taking off the power steering belt and drive without it. I've driven a 1g without power steering and it wasn't that bad at all. It only sucks when you're not moving.

Yeah, it isn't bad. I drive with the belt cut, and one of these days I will just take the pump out and loop the lines at the rack to clean up under the hood.

At first it kind of sucks, but I got used to it. Wouldn't mind switching to the manual rack as it has a better turning radius.

Problem is my car is jacked up with tranny out and interior half gutted.

So whhile its this way I would swap it so I woulndt be able to test it out just by taking the belt off.

I just have to find a rack first.

Just loop the lines. It's only bad if you're driving w/ no PS and have a welded viscous or center diff. D'oh!

Do what Alpine said and loop the lines depending on where its leaking. I've also seen people make an air vent for the rack, not sure if its neccesary for dsms. Just driving w/out the belt is not the same as a manual rack.

Remember that the 1.8 manual rack will take more turns of the steering wheel lock-to-lock; probably make spirited driving a bit more difficult.

I swapped to a manual rack and didn't really notice much difference from having an empty power rack. It takes a little muscle for slow, sharp corners, but otherwise is the cat's ass.

Both manual steering and power steering are "rack and pinion." One is just hydraulically assisted...
