UMN vs SCSU?
Hello everyone. I am in need of ur guys help. I am deciding whether to go to SCSU or stick around for UMN. I really need some opinions about SCSU. I know SCSU is known for partying but besides that, what is is bad/good about it? How is the campus like? How is the class like? How is the amount of work there like? My major would be mechanical engineering. I have applied to both schools and is accepted to both.

Re: UMN vs SCSU?
SCSU will be the easier and cheaper college, but their reputation has been declining recently. U of M is a great choice since its well respected and a Big 10 school. You need to consider how much you are willing to pay (housing in St. Cloud will probably be half what it is at the U of M) and what field you plan to study.

Re: UMN vs SCSU?
For engineering I'd go to the U of M aslong as you can afford it and are willing to spend the extra $$$. Have you considered NDSU in Fargo at all? They are one of the best engineering schools in the country. Not the most exciting town in the world, but I've been to far worse.

If you can afford it, go to the U of M. The campus at SCSU is nice in that all of the buildings are within reasonable walking distance. But like Chris said, SCSU's repuatation is on the downfall and the U of M is highly regarded.

Re: UMN vs SCSU?
The U of M is looking to get grants for research in many fields of study. Most of them are medical, but there are engineering studies going on as well. Iowa State has a great engineering program, but I believe the U is the most prestigous school in this area of the country, as with other fields of study as well. In my major which civil engineering often sit in the same classes, they employ real world Project Managers to teach the material. For my Safety and Loss Control class, my instructor is the regional head for OSHA. I assure you that you will not be disappointed with your education if you choose the University of Minnesota. I have met a few engineering majors - haven't heard anything terrible about the program yet.

Damn, I thought this was a thread about hockey!
Engineering, I would go to UMN but I have no idea how SCSU ranks on the scale in engineering.
SCSU, from what I remember, is good for elementary teaching courses, business, and broadcasting. I attended SCSU but left that college to pursue a computer tech degree elsewhere. SCSU will be a bit cheaper but if you can make it happen, go to UMN. Remeber MacGyver and Jeff Pasolt graduated from SCSU!

Not anymore, there are numerous school districts in the Twin Cities area that won't even interview SCSU grads.

Re: UMN vs SCSU?
U of M if you can afford it, hands down. Even more so that you are going for engineering.
If you dont like the U's prices, look into Mankato for a Mechanical Engineering degree. They still have a good reputation in that field but not at all what the U would offer.

Thats true about Elementary teachers because there are so many of them. They can get the best of the best of the best, and pay them shit because there is no demand.
The engineering program at SCSU is alright from what I hear, they need more moeny (who doesn't) but I don't think they are a bad program. I would basically go to the best school your budget allows you to. Also, I would wait for Fattyboombatty to chime in because he was going to do some sort of engineering at NDSU.

Overall, yes. However, the quality of undergraduate instruction in the ME program is shit. The department got 2 or 3 deficiencies on their ABET review this past fall.

Depending on what you're defining as "this area of the country," I'd argue that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the overall strongest engineering program in the Upper Midwest.

What school doesn't have that problem, especially public? No Americans want to go to graduate school anymore so the positions have to be filled somehow.

UMN hands down for engineering. The only problem is the school is too big and class size is out of control. What got on my nerves was the TA for physics. He barely speaks english and he is grading my paper base on grammar. Besides that if you graduate with good grades from UMN finding a job is not hard. If you have not attend the school yet, call the school up to see if you can sit in one of their classes. That will give you an idea if you like it or not.
