Does anyone run an auto DSM?

Anyone? I'm still seriously considering an auto swap for my '90 AWD TSi. With ITP selling 4K rpm stalls for $475 I'm wondering why more people aren't going auto.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

Yes they do, but 5 speeds are more fun to drive. Although some are finding out that an auto can be just as fast as a 5-speed, if not faster.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

Auto are definetly a great choice if doing a all out drag car. There are more and more fast auto DSMs coming out. Many of them in the 10s on stock trannies, with the exception of stalls, shift kits, and end clutches. Yes a 5 speed is more fun to drive on the street however an auto in my opinion is way more reliable when it comes to DSMs. If I were to build a all out drag car DSM I would definetly go auto, either that or a shep dogbox.

So it all depends on how much power you want to make and what you want out of the car.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

Personally, I think the cable operated shifters in a DSM is comparable to shifting with a wet noodle. My first manual trans was a Muncie shifted by a Verti-gate, so my opinion is a bit skewed. I have a different idea of what a manual shifter should feel like. I still laugh when I see how small the clutch assembly is in a DSM. It's just so damn cute!

They can be built very very fast and can be reliable. The automatic transmission is the Ultimate drag trans.

It depends on what you want it to do. A restalled converter is $475, shift kit is around $75. A trans controller can be a DIY thing with a couple of relays or you can pay $500 for an ITP setup. Don't forget a good trans cooler. The car mentioned above has only these trans upgrades.

A manual trans will require at least a good clutch. $350? That's given you have a good hydraulic setup and the trans functions properly. Good luck pulling a 1.4x sixty foot, even on the bottle.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

Autos are the hot setup on 1Gs now. A bunch of people have run 10s lately with higher stall torque convertors and stock to near stock auto trannies. One of the guys even made some paddle shifters for his. 1.4 60's are common for the auto guys running fast.

Yup, I've seen two different paddle shifter setups.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

That's my plan with the other talon. 3200 stall ipt tq converter, end clutches and their reworked valve body. This should really wake up the t28 that I put on earlier this year. You can see the engine making boost but it doesn't get to the wheels.

This is all 1G turbo stuff. Not 2G non-turbo.

Re: Does anyone run an auto DSM?

The shift kits are pretty inexpensive but you will need it profressionally installed since there are a lot of different springs and spacers. I think you can get a shift kit for about 75 dollars whether its a 1G or a 2G turbo. I am not sure about N/A Tauni.

You can get the Alto end clutch kit for around 125 and the stall for about 475. So basically for under 600 you can have a pretty bullet proof drivetrain setup on a DSM. Might not be as fun on the street but its not fun pulling fucking trannies every weekend because of busted shit either. Synchro trannies are nice when they are in good condition but grind them gears a few times and its all down hill from there. Eventually they don't go into gear very good and then you start breaking shift rails and forks. Unless you have a fully built shep tranny like JET and some others a 5 speed is not all that dependable on a high HP DSM that shifts above 8500.

Are any of the fast FWD guys running autos?
I've always loved autos for drag racing. No missed shifts and dead on consistancy, not to mention faster shifts and less gears to row through.
