We figured we would make a nice little post and maybe get a discussion going on this. Lately we have had a few times where we had to the heads off of a few DSMs and for the 2nd time we found what has become a pretty large concern. Moly Lube has been found on the bottom of the ARPs. You can guess where this is leading. Since ARPs are spun all the way down the moly lube when placed on the bottom has no where to go and causes the head studs to back out. Result = being able to put the slightest amount of pressure by hand on the Studs and they spin freely and back out. And if your ARPs are backing out take a while guess what is happening to the head gasket and such.

are you even supposed to use the moly for the threads going into the block? i didnt think you were, for some reason i thought a little loctite was reccommended if anything...

if you use so much that is hydrolocks the hole, your using too much...

Yeah, Adam is right. The moly only goes on the end where the nut goes on. The other end should be clean and dry with loctite on it and placed in the head hand tight, or lightly tightened.

I had that same question before I installed mine....Instead of guessin' and boogerin' it all up.....I got the scoop from the "Porn King" and hooked it up.

If any of you new guys have any IMPORTANT questions...........don't be afraid to ask. ....If I don't know I'll find someone who does.

Yeah I think we have all the 'important questions covered' :toast:
Allan is just saying that there seems to be some mis-information on to where the moly lube goes.
The head studs get threaded all the way down into the block tight, make sure you clean out the holes before hand, they go in dry.
No lock-tite, no oil, and NO moly lube.
Then obviously it goes, from top to bottom:
Nut w/moly lube
Threads on top of stud w/moly lube
washer
cylinder head
engine block
and the stud goes through the entire assembly, into clean block .

blah blah blah whatever...

If the block threads are clean then I loctite them and let it dry for 24 hours. Also don't thread them all down to the bottom and leave them there. Back them out an 1/8th or 1/4 turn. Don't overtorque them either, too much torque and they are going to stretch and be weaker than if you had just done them at the correct torque.

Thanks, I will probly end up installing ARP's this weekend. So, use loctite or not? If so, I am guessing use the blue??? Also, what headgasket should I use and what should I torwue the nuts down to? The Arp box says 80 ft. lbs (with moly lube) but this looks like a sheet they send out with every set of studs. Thanks again.

I've never read anything that says you don't use Moly on the stud threads. You just don't goop it on the bottom. I put just a little about an inch up from the bottom thread and smear it up and down the threads an inch or so. I use very little so as to not get any extra under the headgasket. Then I put them in finger tight, put the head on, put a dab of moly on the nuts and torque to about 10 lb/ft over spec. I've never had a problem even running 25+ lbs of boost for years.

The sole purpose for moly lube is to ensure an accurate torquewhen turning the nut down. There is no possible benefit from putting it in the holes. As long as the holes are clean, loctite may or may not be used, the big goal is to ensure the stud isn't moving during the torque sequence. I personally don't use loctite in the threads because it is enough of a PITA to get the studs out if you need to, loctite seems to not be needed. The only ones I have ever seen working their way out were molly lubed on the bottom.
