Chumpcar Chumpionship
Who from here is going? I know that the Chevette/CarRacer will be there (sorry, I forgot the team name..), and it looks like Shake and Bake will be there as well.
How's preparations going? Anyone from here want to come to hang out/crew? I'm sure that between our 3 teams we could use people, and if you're thinking about doing Chumpcar next year this is a great time to come out and see how things work. Our crew situation isn't totally figured out, and we pay entrance costs for all crew members and will have a hotel room to crash in.
Its september 3-5 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, with a practice day on the 2nd, racing saturday and sunday, and monday (Labor day) leisurely pack up and head home.
There's also going to be live bands/food/beer on sunday night, not sure about saturday.
As for us, we've already changed out our head gasket again, and we've decided to undergo a fuel cell install, hopefully we don't mess that up too badly.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
We're not very creative, so it's just Team Chevette. We are super excited about going but it seems we are in the "other" class at the moment. We were hoping to at least have a chance at a trophy so I asked if it was possible to be put in the normal class because of our chassis choice. We'll see what happens but were going either way.
Have you guys ever had crew guys before? I've never experienced that luxury in Chumpcar. Our car is coming together bit by bit, although there's a lot between here and there. We just got our clutch master installed and part of our fuel injection conversion completed. Next up is the radiator which should be a trick. Getting the water pump outlet to 180 should be interesting.
You guys going to do anything suspension related to your car maintenance or otherwise? We put new wheel bearings in up front and made sure all the nuts and bolts were tight.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
They put you in EC? On what grounds? Dang, that stinks, I was hoping to see how we stacked up to you guys with a 4g63.
Oh, and we decided to stay turbo My headgasket isn't thanking me.
We've sortof had crew. Most of the time its one or more of our dads, brothers, etc. We had Alex from DB help us out at Brainerd. We're hoping to get some people with wrenching experience again because its a nice relief if something breaks if we have people on the sidelines who can come and take some of the burden off us.
We had a ruined bushing on one of our rear control arms, so we changed that out with a junkyard spare. We went over the front again, everything seems fine but we're bringing spare knuckles for both sides this time. Hopefully if something breaks it breaks in the practice session.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
I don't know exactly if we're in EC yet. I think this race is done a bit differently as it's an invite thing. As far as I understand it, we are running as a non-invite car. I hope once we get back to the standard format next year we can run as normal. I think how we run in September will factor in to how we are classed too. If we run mid pack, as I expect, I don't see any reason why we would be EC in the future. We won't be half as fast as that chopped up 5 series that got put in EC. I'm doing everything I can to choke off this motor as I don't think the stock rearend can handle a 14b motor for very long. I found a MHI 13T turbo to run on stock boost combined with a restrictive exhaust. Our car is light enough that 140-150hp will be more than enough.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
Shake and Bake is coming with a new set of hubs and wheel bearings in the rear. We have been feeding the hampsters a healthy diet of 10-40 mobil 1 (1 quart per 7 hours), but we are switching back to 20-50 conventional to reduced the oil consumption and adding a accusump to save the engine from oil starvation @ 8000 rpm that it will regulary see on the oval. Be sure to know your fuel mileage, we know ours now.. lol
Btw.. why are you guys keeping the turbos? ditching the turbo, the fuel mileage alone would give you an edge over the germans.

Newton, Iowa at Iowa Speedway. Just east of Des Moines.
We're keeping the turbo because racecar, and because power.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
I've done a fuel sipping 1.6l car and a V8 car. The V8 burnt through gas like it was going out of style but it was a blast to drive, the 1.6l spent more time watching the rear view to not get run over than anything else. If I had to choose I would pick speed and passing over fuel mileage every time. Our team will never win but we can always pass cars, so that's what I'll always choose to do from now on.

I should be available to help at least either Saturday or Sunday, maybe both. What time of day is the racing?

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
Well whoever needs help, just let me know and I'll try to make it out for as much time as possible. I'm not the greatest wrench in the world, especially not being familiar with these cars, but I should be able to help out.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
I agree with CarRacer, faster cars are more fun for sure. We're doing things to mitigate the weaknesses therein.
Progress! I ran out of welding gas at like midnight. Tried to borrow a tank today, and failed. We'll finish it this week sometime.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
Looking good. That bottom cradle is a nice touch and that tank will sit nice and low too. What are you guys doing for a fuel pump setup? Inline?

No compression due to valve lash holding the exhaust valves open.

Re: Chumpcar Chumpionship
welp, we finally finished up all the mechanical work we wanted to get done before the chumpionship. Feels good to be ready! Packing up stuff tomorrow, and a last minute alignment this week (2nd try) and we're ready to go! Getting excited.
