New Plasma tv

Tomorrow planning on picking up a new TV.
I am torn between two TVs.
First one (my current favorite)
Samsung PN50C550G1F
1080p, 50", 600hz, great reviews, $760 open box at best buy.

Second one
Panasonic P50S20
Same Specs, Same Price at Ultimate Electronics open box as well.
The only problem i have with this TV is the look of it. I know it sounds stupid but the Samsung looks a lot better and more quality, the surround around the screen is glass instead of the plastic surround of the Panasonic, The stand is also metal/glass.
I dont care about speakers (which seems to be the reviews downfall of the set) because i have surround sound.

I would like to stay under $800 and both of these sets are in great condition (nothing that i can see wrong with them).
Not looking for any internet connectivity or any bells and whistles, (3d is worthless to me as first of all my son would never keep the glasses on and if you dont have enough glasses it makes it really stupid to get it, ill save that for when i have a true home theater set up with projector etc, and when my son is older).

Re: New Plasma tv

Better picture for a room that is set up perfectly for it. and MUCH cheaper than LCD or LED.
Has anyone gone to the OpenBoxTVs.com warehouse? on their craigslist ad they said they have 3 65" plasmas for 720 each. They are in hopkins, so i may just swing by to see what they have.

ya i went there, all of their t.v's that they say are a good deal are broken in some way. And those 3 60" tv's they have are the "older" projection tvs. I would avoid that store.

And i would go with the samsung.

Plasma is faster, better for sports and fast action shows. And yes, go Samsung.

yeah i have heard 5 and 10 years... but if you think about it... What kind of TV did you have 5 or 10 years ago. 5 years ago I had a 27" tube TV, 3 years ago i had a projector with a 110" Screen, now i have a 32" LCD, even by the lowest standards of plasma it would have been replaced.

This is a very good point. Carry on Tom.

Re: New Plasma tv

It might get a bit dimmer, but technology has gotten so much better. I had one for 5 years and it was great. Only one pixel went bad, and showed all colors except blue. They have adjustments to bring it back to bright until you are ready to replace it.

Re: New Plasma tv

Panasonic plasmas get some serious love from the home theater gurus, but sounds like you prefer the Samsung so go for it! I'm watching the Cowboys get owned right now on my Samsung.

Tomorrow jessica and i will be checking out that Openboxtvs warehouse. If they seriously have a 65" plasma for 720 bucks we will be bringing that home, if its an old as set then we will likely pass and pick up the samsung.

Re: New Plasma tv

Question for the OP... why not wait until the TV price wars get hot? They are saying last year's price wars is NOTHING compared to this years. Already you can get 55" LCDs for $800. If I hadn't replaced my plasma last year, I'd be getting the biggest LCD I could afford this year. You should be able to get a NEW tv for less than what's you're looking at now. Are you sold on plasma for sure?

Re: New Plasma tv

I have the Panasonic Plasma TC-P42S2 and its awesome. The guys at work say to never get the Samsung. They see way to many problems with them. My buddy had the 50" Samsung plasma, and the screened screwed up not even two months after he got it.

But who do you think has the bigger market share? Obviously more units means more defect units. My wife's had her 46" LCD Samsung for two years and everything has been perfect on it.

Don't plasmas have image burn-in problems and cost a $hit load to fix?

Either way, I agree to wait for Black Friday. That's when I buy my electronics (TVs, cameras, consoles.)

Re: New Plasma tv

My Samsung leaks light along the bottom edge in one place. I prefer the smaller Toshiba we have in the bedroom (picture quality, features, etc.).
