Death trap/econo box suggestions
So my new job will have me commuting 30 miles each way, being a cheap ass I'm thinking about getting rid of the ranger and getting something that gets more MPGs.
This is my first career and I was thinking that maybe I should just hold on to the ranger for a while and maybe buy something nicer once I achieve my goal of getting a house.
I'm kinda just thinking aloud here, I need to figure this out soon since I'm looking to get some snow tires for the ranger (14s are cheap)
I'd figure I'd post this since a lot of you are friends and are ahead of me in teh career game and probably know what I'm going thru a little. (apart from being a cheap indian mofo)
TIA
Aaron

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
Were you thinking something cheap/good gas mileage?.. Like an old CRX/Civic hatch/civic/corrola? Or something a little newer(same/similar models)?

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
A mid 90's corolla or prism lsi would be my vote. A friend of mine had one, and loved that thing, got great mpgs and seats 5!

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
I'm thinking something cheap, like you said corolla, small civic, shooting for 35mpg+ closer to 40mpg if I'm making the switch.
Right now I'm trying to figure out if the improvement in MPGs is worth losing the trucking abilities that I love.

Im gald your going to right way as I dint. I bought the Evo right away and messed up bad haha. Thus why its sold. Id say stay with the ranger if you can hack it and buy a house first. The market is good for a house son!

I'll hit an old man, that loves a DSM like a 16 yr old.

25-26mpg over the summer, I'm guessing about 21-23mpg this winter.

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
Not aweful, but not great either. I'd rock it for awhile as its cheap and reliable and a truck is often very useful.

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
it will be nearly impossible to find, but a diesel ranger (has a mitsu motor too) or a diesel s-10/15. Had a friend back in high school with a diesel s-15, claimed he could get 40mpg highway.
I would have said MM or D-50, but not sure if they sold those here.
otherwise, an early to mid 90's Escort hatch

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
My old sentra regularly got upper 30's, lower 40's. I averaged 36mpg city/highway combo, but all highway it was low 40's. On the MN Mazda cruise to Itasca I averaged 43mpg.
Bought that SOB for $550. Tiny motor+light foot+manual=success.

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
I think I'm just gonna rock the ranger for now, I found a super clean tercel that I wanted but $2k is outrageous.
I'm just gonna get some snow tires for the ranger and see what the future holds for now.

Rock the truck, it's paid for (right?) and somewhat reliable. Get some snow tires for it and just drive it.

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
On second thought, why not just get a MK4 supra tt or a mid 90's NSX? Good mileage, reliable, etc.

Maybe the NSX Supras don't get good gas mileage nor are they the most reliable things ever.

Re: Death trap/econo box suggestions
ok, i checked and turns out $56/tire for winterforce snow tires are a little bit cheaper than a NSX.
