5.0L Top Speed Test

We had some sweet conditions on Friday afternoon up in East Bethel. Decided to do a few top speed runs. Got one on video. We actually beat the speed we got on video by 1mph earlier. Was fun

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

It's a small block Chevy 305. More commonly referred to as the Mercruiser Carburated 5.0L in the marine world. Rated at 220hp I believe.

We also only have a 14.25 x 19p prop on there, which we purposely put on there for less top end but a better hole-shot (for pulling up skiers). We are reving it right to about 4800rpm there, which is about as high as these were meant to rev. With a higher pitched prop (21 or 23) we'd have passed 55mph for sure. Plus if we had less weight (less people, no coolers, etc), we'd be really cruisin !!

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

Yeah 19 pitch prop is really small for that boat unless all you are doing is pulling skiers/wakeboarders; a 21 pitch would be perfect for that boat, you would not be happy with a 23 pitch unless you had only 2 people in the boat unloaded. If you want the best of both worlds, get a 21 pitch in a 4 or 5 blade. It will give you better stability and a better hole shot, you would get about 55mph out of it because at the speed a 4 or 5 blade creates drag.

But 50mph is plenty fast in a boat anyway. Oh yeah, and you should never be able to hit rev limiter in a boat in most cases, if you are you are proped way to low, because the prop is what limits your RPMS.

Nice! That's a pretty nice ride for that speed, was that on ottertail, or elsewhere? I love boats 'geared' low like that, the 19 prop is what I'd rock for sure. Pulling skiiers/tubers it all I'd do with a boat like that, dawn till dusk.

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

It was on Friday, about noon. We were on Coon Lake up in East Bethel. It was a little cloudy out, so there were minimal people out on the boat (little cloudy, plus most people work on a friday). So there were maybe 5 fishing boats out on the lake besides us. So it was so calm, perfect water conditions! Probably some of the best conditions we've gotten to enjoy all year! Did some skiing, wakeboarding, and some top speed trials. The boat ran so smoothly on the calm water, it was a blast!

Hey Brando, you have to bring that thing down here to Red Wing, we have our boat docked in a slip all season. There are some pretty cool places to go down here on the Mississippi.

That'd be kind of a haul for me, but maybe someday. We usually just hit up lakes/rivers right around here.

Very nice B, might have gotten an extra mph or two trimmed up just a hair. But that's still rockin'.

Me and the boy had the Sea Doo out on the river yesterday, it does about 45mph with just me on it.

Dude boat speedo's are usually not accurate at all. Get the gps on there!!! Also trim that thing up you'll get a few more mph possibly.

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

Trimming it up with that prop isn't going to get any more mph, it was bouncing off rev limiter already.

50+mph in that boat with a 19 pitch prop is very good, it could be going even a bit faster on the GPS, boat gauges usually read a bit low.

http://www.watercraftservices.com/Propwiz.php

If you care to tweek your prop a bit Brandon this site is what I use for our boat and it works great. From the specs I knew about your boat I got that you should either a 19 pitch for mostly watersports, or a 21 pitch for performance/watersports. So you should be good to go with what you have but with only a few people in it in good conditions you are going to be bouncing off rev limiter at WOT. Looks fun though, sounds good too.

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

To everyone saying to trim it up, did you not notice the trim gauge? It is trimmed up! I think you can even hear me mention it in the video at one point.

Once we start getting higher than that 3/4 mark, it gets to be too high and it will sometimes free-rev. Right where it's at is where we've had the best results.

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

Craig,

Thanks for the link. I have actually done all that research already though We got that size for a reason. The boat came with a 21 pitch prop. It still worked great but it got destroyed in the St Croix. Before I bought a new prop I did a lot of reading up, and decided on the 19 pitch prop since we mainly use this boat for watersports, or just cruising around not at WOT. This boat spends most of it's life at less than 35mph.

So I now have 2 props. One is a 14.25 x 19p and the other is a 14.5 x 19p. They work perfect for what we use it for. They are both 3-blade aluminum props. We tend to venture to different lakes a lot, so we prefer having a regular aluminum prop as we often have no idea what the lake is like as far as depth and what not (and we haven't gotten a depth finder yet). So I'd much rather just tear up a weak cheap aluminum prop, rather than a nice SS one or the lower unit. I much prefer the cheap aluminum prop be the weak link that gets busted.

Re: 5.0L Top Speed Test

Ahhh I see, thats what kind of threw me off, because that boat is supposed to come with a 21 pitch prop, didn't know you trashed the other one.

As you also found out with a 19 pitch prop you are going to be bouncing off rev limiter quite often at WOT, hence why they come with a 21, but from the looks of it your don't do that often anyway.

If you really wanted to bling out your drive, get a twin screw setup, I bet you already researched that though huh?
