tire size quuestion

we are looking at snow tires for the mini, we have an extra set of 17s for it but the size that fits (205 45 17) the cheapest is $140ea. is a 205 50 17 (3% larger) gonna be bad? they are $91ea

The speedo will read low, the car won't feel quite as peppy, and its possible (but not likely with stock suspension) that the tires will rub at full-lock.

Re: tire size quuestion

Like Kracka said, your speedo with read low. At 60mph on the speedo you'll be going about 62.

The overall diameter of the 50 series tire will be just under an inch bigger than the 45 series tire with a 205. Unless the clearance now is super close, I doubt you will rub under normal driving conditions.

I would think you would be just fine with the 50's.

I did that on my wife's car, but like a 5% larger diameter. You won't even notice the difference driving it, just have to remember when going on the highway that its gonna read slightly low, but 3% is really slight, your speedometer might have been off by more than that from the factory.
